Gentlemen: I have a 1957 built 300 H&H. Shoots great, but has had the bolt knob polished bright and the action has been polished and reblued (not dished, fortunately). How much has that situation detracted from the value? % is OK. Thanks for the insight! Arthur Olds

I attended a local auction the other day and a "shooter" pre-64 Winchester in 300 H&H went for $1150. It looked well used, not abused.

That's about what I've seen shooter pre-'64's .300 H&H's go for too. In fact that's exactly what I paid for mine.

I was at a gunshow over the weekend and looked pretty hard at pre-64 Super Grade in .300 H&H. It was pretty darn nice except for an aftermarket pad. A reproduction red Winchester pad would have helped a great deal. The seller was asking $1900. There was the possibility he would take $1500 (someone else was dickering on it).

No one answered the gentleman's question....A pre 64 that's been messed with as he states takes a lot away from its collector value. It may be one of the nicest 300 h&h's around but it's been "messed" with and is not in original condition anymore....I"ve got a buddy that has a transition model 70 and the same question was asked on his behalf. My friend was very discouraged when guys here told him his rifle was only worth $600.00 after rebluing, bolt and bolt knob polished.....A 300 h&h is still a very desireable comodity though and something that adds to the value. Seeing how it is a shooter grade 300 and based on the replies regarding my friends rifle, I'd venture to say the OP's rifle is worth about $1,000.00. But as we know it is only worth what someone is willing to pay.....
