It has been long enough (probably too long) on the first coating, so we're looking at re-staining the hunting shack.

[Linked Image]

Sikkens application guides say to sand off all the old stain, prior to new application.

I'm lazy.

Is it really necessary to remove all the stain to re apply? I've read power wash, don't power wash, sand it all, don't sand it all....seems like there are a lot of different opinions out there.

Even if I wasn't lazy, our weather windows are usually too short to sand it all down, then re apply the new coat.

Can we get by with just a good cleaning? Will it look like [bleep] if we do?

Any thoughts?

If you powerwash you'll have to wait 2-3 weeks for the moisture to come out. We're in the process of staining right now(finally the rain quit!).We are using an opaque Behr stain in Red cedar colour,2 coats covers the original dark brown colour.Sophets and beams are done in yellow cedar. We used a leaf blower to blow off cocoons, cobwebs etc,it works way better and is much faster than brushing.Good luck,Monashee

Thanks.

Did you wire brush the outside first at all, or just go with the leaf blower and start applying the new?

Hunting shack? In these parts, that would be a castle.

Is Sikkens what was originally applied?

How's it holding up?

Is it fading, chalking, peeling, flaking or cracking?

I wouldn't want sand the whole cabin either. That's a LOT of work. However, the new finish is only going to as good as what's underneath it.

That's as far as I want to stick my neck out. grin

Yep, Sikkens on the first go round.

Nothing but fading, to speak of. There are two upright cedar decorative logs in the front of the house that are flaking a bit, but the main house is mostly just faded.

Nope didn't wire brush. It's rough cedar well protected by overhang and is in very good shape. It is dry though and we're going through a fair amount of stain. It's worth it though the house really pops! Monashee
