Considering the concensus seems to be the 223 is such a great deer round?

I think the 270 WSM is a great round, I would use a different bullet.

Caliber is fine, but i'd rather have the partition.

I agree with the previous two posts. Good caliber, but not the bullet I would choose. I've killed four elk with the 270 WSM, three with 140 Accubonds and one with a 140 TSX. If I do it again, it will be with one of those or a Partition.

I've killed lots of elk with a 270 Win but I always used a much more substantial bullet like Partitions or Speer Hotcores. I always had great success with both of those.

Killed enough deer with that combination to know it would work if placed well, but yowza, it stress the bullet and makes a mess. Wouldn't try to break shoulders or do any kind of angling shot with that combo. And though I used that combination on deer, I switched to the TSX when I went elk hunting. After that bull, I'd probably go with the 140 Accubond or 150 Partition or something along those lines.

Thanks guys. You all express what I was thinking. I had heard the NBs of late were substantially stronger than those I used years ago with poor results in the aspect of deep penetration.

270wsm is more than capable for elk, but were i in your position, i'd sure use a better bullet such as a 150gr partition. good luck with whatever you select.

I think the 270 WSM is a great round, I would use a different bullet. This is the only post needed in this tread. So, I'll merely at a +1

Eyeball, what would I think of the 130 NBT and elk via flight 270 WSM. Dead elk baby, range, drop the hammer grab the knife cause the elk that volunteers is gonna hit the turf toot sweet!
No worries my friend, light the torch.

Tanner, I've shot sst's out of my .270wsm. There in my top 3. Mule- no prob. My favorite load is; 130gr Barnes BT @3300fps, In my M70 they seem shoot slightly tighter.

My choice is a .270 WSM and 140 NAB bullets. It's killed EVERY critter I've pointed it at. From Antelope to Elk they have all died!

Have used the 270 short mag and 130 grain triple shock on bulls with great success. Knocks the snot out of them.

I'd go Accubond or Partition on elk.
I've heard some less than stellar reports on the SST, so I think I'll pass on that one, too.

Yeah, the elk will probably die.
Still, I don't trust cup and core bullets at high impact velocities and the .270WSM is a speedster. For similar velocities I run a variety of premiums including AccuBond, TTSX, MRX, Scirocco II, North Fork and A-Frame.
The problem is you never know at what range you will be shooting (i.e. the impact velocity) until the event. The premiums listed have performed well for me near and far.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

I have since sold my 270 WSM, but used it on whitetail and mule deer with 140 grain AB's and XP3's and 130 grain TSX's with grand results. For elk, IMO, one of the bullets I mentioned should be fine and better options than the NBT.

Q 4 the naysayers of the 130 NBT for elk. How many elk have you actually seen taken and or have personally taken with the 130 NBT?
Sorry, but I just gotta ask...grin
Thx in advance

Dober,
I have never shot a elk with 130 grain BT from a 270 WSM. But I did shoot a little antelope buck with one at 331 yards. The bullet broke the on side shoulder and stopped in the ribcage on the other side.
I would have to believe that a elk shoulder is a lot tougher to get through than a antelopes. So it would be anyone's guess on far the bullet would penetrate after breaking a elk shoulder.
I am not going to drive a thousand miles to hunt elk with a bullet that can't make it through a antelope.
Just my opinion but I would use something else.
