I recently picked up a 700CDL in 257 Wby. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with 100gr TSX, Sierra MK,or Scirocco's in your rifles?
I am looking at useing Retumbo, H1000 or RL22.

I do not have a .257 Wby Magnum, but my dad does and he has had great results with the 100 grain Tipped TSX over IMR 7828 powder.

That thing is a death ray on antelope, and drops wild hogs like you cannot believe.

I would avoid Sierra MK bullets for game. Sierra recommends they not be used for hunting and they are right. I saw a guy shoot an antelope last season with a .308 using a 168 grain Matchking. It killed the hell out of that antelope, but with one shot he had three exit holes!

Several give good reports with about 72 grains of Reloader 22. It's OK in mine (like MOA), but I think IMR 7828 might be what I end up using given it's performance in a couple other Weatherby's.

On the Match Kings... I used them in a 7mm Rem mag for years on elk, until I was told I should not do that.

100gr TTSX- IMR7828 or Ramshot Magnum lit by a Fed 215M

I worked up to the Hodgdon max with H-1000 with the smk's I had some pressure signs and backed off a grain. It shoots lights out. I also shoot the 100gr ttsx with H-1000. Same deal with Barnes worked up to there max found where the pressure was and backed off. It also shoots really well in my rifle.

Not sure if the H-1000 data is heavy or just too much in my rifle

Perhaps you have every considered about adding a small bit more than simply your thinking? I mean, everything you say ergo baby organic is important and everything. However it is acquired no punch, no pop! Possibly in case you added a pic or two, a video? Maybe you have this type of extra powerful blog when you let individuals SEE what youre talking about rather than reading it. I settled on 70 gr RL22 in Norma cases, sparked by Fed 215 under Nosler Etips @ 3575 fps. Honest to goodness one-hole groups and no signs of excessive pressure in my 24" barreled Vangard.

Fantastic cartridge.

My current 257(700LSS) likes R25 and 7828 under the 100g Barnes pills. R25 is the speed winner if that's of interest. Haven't ran the MKs, but the 115 VLDs are pretty sweet at 3500. I have a couple boxes of the Swft SCs, but couldnt get them to shoot worth a darn in this particular rig.

Building another as well with a #4 Rock 1/10 at 25in. Hoping it will dance with the Swifts. That pill has alot going for it.

I tried a few last night and 71-72 gr of RL-22 is too warm for my rifle.

72gr left extractor marks on the case. Sadly I knew better than starting at the max. I guess it was a good reminder.

What have been your COAL that has worked best?
I have read many articles regarding best length for Wby calibers freebore. Seems like most say to seat them short, because the TSX likes the jump. Is this true?

Can't remember the COAL right off the top of my head, but my TTSXs are seated just over the last driving band as you can see in this pic:



My max is about the same w/ the TTSXs as w/ the ETips; 70 gr RL22. As you can see from lower left & center bulls, that combo shoots a hair better than the TTSX in my rifle:



I haven't tested terminal performance in either bullet yet; honestly haven't quite swallowed the mono-metal kool-aid yet, hence the testing of the NAB.

For my LSS, I'm running the 100TTSXs at 3.25.

I shot four deer with two shots from a Mark V (3704 feet per second) and two shots from a Savage (3695fps) I made into a .257 Weatherby. Three of them dropped at the shot. One ran down the hill away from the truck (I was at the top of the ridge) for about 100 yards. It took three hours to get it to the road. The Barnes went through both lungs in a perfect broad side shot at about seventy-five yards. None of the bullets were recovered.

Edited to add the Weatherby used IMR7828 @ 72.0 and the Savage uses IMR7828 @ 71.0 grains.

My Vanguard likes the 110 Accubond and 115 gr TSX and doesn't care as much for any 100 gr bullet. It also prefers Ramshot magnum or IMR-7828.

Anyone have any experience shooting this load in a german Weatherby with a 1-12" twist?

The german 1-12 can be problematic until you realize the issues involved. The factory ammo back then was a bullet that had a lot of bearing surface like a semi spitzer which would stabalize the factory loads.

You may be forced to contact Weatherby and get more specific information. The 85g Tripple shock is nothing to sneeze at if you hand load.

I had problems getting some bullets in a 1-10 to stabalize that were a vld type bullet.

Yeah.. it seems to shoot the cheap (for Weatherby) factory 100 Gr.spitzers pretty well, so I thought I'd try to come up with a load with a little tougher bullet that might bite the groves in a similar fashion. I want to use this gun for Mule Deer and I really don't know what to think about that .25 Cal Spitzer on that kinda game.

Everyone should watch a good size mule deer buck take a 100 grain Hornady through the lungs or through both shoulders. Lots of doubts on how good that bullet really is, would be answered while watching the buck bounce.

100gr Swift Scirocco's pushed by H1000 have accounted for bear / muley's / flagtails and i've yet to recover one. They seem nearly as tough as a TSX/TTSX but without the dixie cup BC.....

I used a 100g Hornady flat base at 3800 fps, NEVER a bullet failure...never had one move after the shot also. I shot R#22 with a fed 215.
