And yup, he struck my lure, no snag job, which was amazing with that 12 incher in its gullet.

BUT... The biggest northern I've caught was while finessing walleye that had settled on the bottom of a mud flat with the summer doldrums. Six pound test on a light rod, now that was fun! (And why I almost always use a leader.)

i prefer from a boat too but just pointing out that alot of the time snot rocket fishing from the bank isnt a handicap and you have more or less the same access to the same fish the boat guys are targeting unlike alot of fishing where the boat is a distinct advantage at times.....

I agree that I am doing good from the bank. Just that at times the conditions change and sometimes I cannot take advantage. The best fish I have caught so far were in 6' of water eating crayfish on a cloudy afternoon. Most of my hits were less than 20' from the bank. Sun came out and no more bites. I think the fish moved to deeper water. My grandpa said that for the most part boaters and bank fishermen fish the same water and I have found it to be very true.

Most of my fishing was pre-boat and fishing from the bank is just fine if there's enough room for a back cast. Close to shore, predators like northerns like to sit in the weeds at the weed edge and ambush what swims by. So target the weed edges.

They can be fussy though. One early spring, while the water was still cold and clear, a friend and I found northerns lined up shallow along a long weedless point - warmer water there from the sun's heat. Couldn't get one to bite so we decided to go through our tackle boxes. The only thing they would go after was a cheap hammered brass spoon. Not shiny brass, not hammered silver, nothing but those stupid hammered brass spoons. No idea why.

If trolling I like using an Erie Deerie for pike. Either a real or fake minnow on the hook. No leader needed.

We take a trip to Ont. early in June. The lake is clear and the weeds not up yet so we have a few sand and gravel bars where we can sight fish them. I pull out the fly rod then. Like to see then inhale that fly. Here are some pictures from this year. Fish are 36" to 40", 12 to 18 pounds.

Got this guy early this morning - fishing 17 feet. That's my brother holding him. Someday I need to teach him how to drive my crackberry. Everyone else always holding my fish.

I wasn't gunnin for pike but knew the area held them. He tore the crap outta my crank bait. Later hooked up with what I believe was another pike in the same area. Snapped my 30lb braid like nothing.

Caught him up on one of the bays in Door County - big water pike sure fight a ton harder than small lake pike I've caught of comparable size.

Nice fish teal! From what I hear, the Green Bay/Door County/Sturgeon Bay fishery has really turned on in the past few years. Now that I'm back in Wisconsin, I'm going to have to bring the boat up and take a shot.

Thanks - yes, GB and the Fox are coming on strong lately.

Fox has always held walleyes but now it's becoming quite the musky fishery. 50+ inchers are caught every year.

Nice fish. I have not been catching mine near the weeds but all my successful lures have been something that the perch will chase or school around. I think the pike are getting attracted by the perch swarming around my lure.

Yeah - I can see that - sort of like a natural umbrella bait or flasher for salmon.
