Heading to Wy for a late October muley hunt into the 2f area. We are packing in on horses and staying in a walled tent for 7 days. This is a rifle hunt. This is also my first "pack in" trip. I have lot of the gear from a previous trip, but I'm a gear gear nut and am always looking to improve my supplies.
Thanks

Word to the wise;

Even though it's a horse hunt, don't over pack. Your guide will thank you, a lot. And, you won't embarrass yourself. When I ran a horse outfit and even before, when I was working as an employee for various horse outfits, it was always nice when a guy showed up with a light and compact duffel (12x12x24, 35 lbs). Makes a nice lengthwise top-load to through a single diamond on or, to top-load sideways (between the forks) and throw a double-diamond.

Get a list from your outfitter and listen to what Maverick940 wrote.

Take a good sleeping bag rated at 0F and a good warm ground pad, enough clothing to keep warm, lots of extra socks and an extra pair of boots because your boots might get soaked while walking through the snow. Take the normal hunting stuff. Your outfitter should take care of everything else.

kc has posted some good lists in the past - do a search.

one thing you might really need is rifle care. horse sweat and snow can cause rust pretty quick. i pack a plastic bag with an oil soaked rag and 3 feet of weed eater line. you can push out snow or cut a patch off the cloth to push through the barrel with the line,if you forget to tape the barrel.

last year i found disposable tooth brushes with tooth paste already on them in wally world. they worked out ok.

Good advice. I am packing as light as possible. This is not a guided hunt, so I have only myself and the guys going with me to count on for this, they live there so their experience is the main factor. No experience here for a hunt this late in the season. Any other advice would be great.
Thanks

Sorry. I misunderstood. I assumed that since you were packing in on horses that you had an outfitter. But since it's a DIY hunt I will post the gear list that I will use next Fall for a similar type hunt. We rent a horse, use it to pack in the group gear, food, and fuel, then stable it at a ranch near the trailhead. Then we backpack in carrying all our personal gear in our packs.

MY GEAR FOR COLORADO HORSEPACK ELK HUNT
I own multiples of just about every kind of gear. This gear is what I actually use when horse pack hunting for elk in Colorado, not necessarily the best, just what I use.

GROUP GEAR
Tent for sleeping: Cabelas XPG-4 four season (2 people in a 4-man tent)
Tent (group): REI Base Camp-6 (group cooking tent)

Stoves: MSR "Whispelite" & Dragonfly, white gas
Pots: MSR Alpine Guide cook kit with extras added
Fuel: 1 gallon white gas

Water Filters: Katadyn "Hiker Pro" & Katadyn Base Camp Gravity Filter
Water Jug: Brand X 2-gallon plastic collapsible

Radios: HP Talkabout T5720 (emergencies only)
Space Heater: Brand X single burner space heater (use inside group tent only when awake)
Propane: one 16 ounce canister per day.
Lantern: Brand X LED (take a couple for use inside sleep tent)
Lantern: Brand "X" 2 burner propane with plastic carrying case
Roll-up Table with folding legs & noncombustible top
Camp Chairs
Duct Tape: 1/2 Roll
Multi-Tool: Leatherman
Rope: 1/8" woven nylon

PERSONAL GEAR
Rifle: T/C Icon Weathershield 30-06 with Leupold VX-III 3.5 x10 x40 scope, Warne Rings and Federal Premium HIGH ENERGY 180 grain Nosler Partitions

Field Dressing Gear: Havalon folding scalple with orange handle and replaceable stainless steel surgical blades, 4 spare blades, Gerber Gator Saw, and T.A.G. game bags. Game Saver citric acid spray, T.T.C. (Taxidermy Trophy Compound).

Binoculars: Leupold 10x42 "Wind River Cascades" with chest harness
Range Finder Nikon Monark 800
GPS: Garmin etrex Summit
Compass: Silva
Maps: USGS, BLM & USFS maps

Daypack, hunting: Osprey Atmos 65 (4,200 cu.in.)
Backpack, hauling loads: North Face Back Shadow (6,400 cu.in.)
Sleeping Bag: Western Mountaineering Antelope 5F goose down
Sleeping Pad: Big Agness "Insulated Air Core" air mattress + Thermarest Z pad

Personal Cook Kit: brand "X" Mess Kit (like the Boy Scouts)
Cup: MSR Sierra Cup (large)
Titanium Mug (1 quart Nalgene bottle fits inside)
Canteen: Nalgene 1 liter
Pocket Knife: Victorinox Swiss Army Knife "Climber"

Flashlight: Coleman LED flashlight, 90 lumens
Headlamp: LED Black Diamond

Fire starter kit
First aid kit
Personal hygiene kit

WHAT TO WEAR
NO COTTON CLOTHING - The only thing that I carry that has any cotton in it, is a bandanna, which has multiple uses. If cotton clothing gets wet, it doesnt dry and it promotes hypothermia.

DRESS IN LAYERS - I dress in layers so that I can adapt to a changing environment and to my level of exercise. I wear the kind of clothing that will perform well in a variety of environments and I carry enough extra in my daypack so that I can adapt to changes.

Base Layer: polypropylene long johns and briefs, Patagonia lightweight (wear one & take one extra)
Socks: wool/nylon blend socks like Smart Wool or Merino wool with cushion soles (wear one, take two extra)
Boots: Asolo Sasslong
Trousers: Brush pants with waterproof nylon on the legs and I also took a pair of wool/synthetic blend six-pocket trousers (wear one, take one extra)
Shirt: Nylon/synthetic blend orange (wear one, take one extra)
Vest: Eddie Bauer ultra-light goose down
Sweater: polyester fleece hoodie orange
Rain/Wind Gear: Arcteryx Nylon/Gortex parka
Vest: orange
Gloves: at least two pair
Hats: orange, Knitted wool/nylon Watch Cap with a small bill and a Ball Cap
Gaiters: OR Crockodiles Gortex/nylon
Sunglasses

LEAVE IN TRUCK
Cooler: 120 quart, Igloo
Hiking Boots, extra pair

Hope this helps. Good luck. Have a safe and enjoyable hunt.

What external clothing do you guys use? I have some wool pants and a Cabelas whitetail extreme parka but they are not in the best condition from some hard hunting. Going the first week in Nov. Suggestions??

Depends on the latitude and the elevation at that latitude. For instance;

During November on the Kaibab, I'd be sure to have wool and/or fleece along.

But, during November in the Chugach, I'd take only wool and/or fleece.

And, If in the Adirondacks during November, again I'd be wearing wool and/or fleece.

However, if near the Everglades, I'd opt for cotton and fleece.

So, the last one is somewhat of a "change-up".
