I have several rifles based on FN actions plus a Husqvarna with the FN style actiom and the floorplate and release are identical to the ones on my rifles, one of which is a 7x57. Guess that keeps this on topic. Looks like your rifle might be based on one of those two actions. Nothing wrong with that as they're my favorites to work with.

Yep, Looking again at the pictures, I decided the rifle was built on a commercial FN rather than a military Mauser action. That explains the floorplate release.

You can't beat the lines of a Biesen or a Goens rifle..... Al, your 7x57 and 6.5x55 are superb examples of the Biesen's talent.... It has been fun reading this thread.

BTW, my short-throated 7x57 will push 2750 with 160's and about any top book load...

I'm kind of partial to the 7x57 myself.

Easy to shoot, easy to hit with, and it kills stuff pretty quickly.

Actually mine isn't a FN or Husqvarna, it is a pre war Mdl 38 version of the venerable 98 Mauser, manufactured in Loew, Germany. it is also what is called a intermediate length action, neither short or long and has the pressure ring in the breech to make it a "strong" or suitable action for contemporary cartridges.

Those intermediate actions are great. Not many companies making them any more, though my own present 7x57 is built on the Montana 1999 "short" action with a 3.1" magazine.

I measured my short action stainless model 70 and it's magazine is 3.1" as well. I've been toying with the idea of rebarrelling it to 7x57 as well.

I really have very little to contribute to this thread, but I really enjoyed it. Beautiful rifles btw.

With that said, my 7x57 is a Ruger M77 (Tang safety) that has also been a little slower than expected, even subtracting for the short (20") barrel. I attribute it to it's long throat, which I believe is lowering the pressures.

The Hornady 175 RN seated to cannelure leaves me with a tenth of an inch jump, and the 154 RN is nearly disengaged from the casing before it reaches the rifling. The Hornady 175 spire point seated to the cannelure has something like a .25" jump IIRC. It took me 48.0 grains of H-4831sc to get to 2350 with that bullet. I stopped there and am playing with faster powders and longer bearing surfaces now.

Sometimes loading a 7x57 can be troublesome, but it is worth the extra effort when you find a good load.

I am passing on a load submitted a few times on the fire by member Seafire that may be worth a try. I know it worked in one of my 7x57s. 40 grains IMR 3031 175 grain Hornady Interlock SP gives me about 2485 - 2500 fps in a 22" bbl with 1.25" groups at 100 yards.

Actually, I have already found one load that the rifle likes. I just don't like it because I am a cheap SOB, and I am bound and determined to find something it likes in the 175 grain range.

Unlikely as it is, it seems to like Barnes's 120 Tipped TSX loaded long at 3.125" COAL and just about any reasonable charge of H-4895. Go figure...
