I just acquired a 1951 Savage 99EG today. It is in excellent condition, minus the fact that the stock has been cut straight. Anyway...I had bought it about 9 months ago, but was finally able to pick it up today. I looked it over good at that time and don't remember any issues. So I brought it home and gave it a thorough cleaning. I cycled the action a few times and noticed that right before lockup it is rather stiff. Now its been about 9 years since I handled a 99 and I can't remember if that is a normal part of the cycle or not. It just doesn't seem normal to me. Any input would be appreciated.

Well, the bolt locks up against the back of the receiver at that point.Perhaps that is what you're feeling. Its entirely normal.

Savage 99 cocks on closing. That is what you may be describing as 'stiff'.

Putting a very small dab of moly grease where the rear of the bolt locks against the receiver is a good idea if you have not already done so.

That's what I figured, and I will put some grease on right now. With the newly blued surface on mine, it is now so tight that it is hard to open with the rifle shouldered. Thanks for the question and the answers it generated. :-)

I have the opposite problem...I have a hard time closing the lever while shouldered. I'll have to get some moly grease and see if it helps.
