Hunting deer in the snow with a flintlock is great fun and when you add meat to the freezer it's even more rewarding.

I took this little buck on Dec 9th with my .62cal Jaeger flintlock. It was a 40yd shot with a patched round ball and a short blood trail.

Anyone else hunting with flintlocks?

I got one with a 60 cal flinter a couple years ago, But that was with my dads flinter due to the fact his tag was filled. Im still using the lyman capplock until I get mine built.

So far I got a swamped 44" B weight .50cal colerain barrel, chambers lock and a stump cut piece of maple.

Sounds like your gonna have a nice flinter when you geter done.

I've had my .62 for a long time and it's accounted for a lot of game over the years. Here's a picture of the first critter I took with it in 1979.

It used to be that we would draw muzzle loader elk one year and muzzleloader deer the next. But now with so many people applying for it we have gone 3 years with out a tag.

I have been hunting with flintlocks for 30 yrs. here in the northeast (NH). Since the advent of these newfangled in-line model 70 wannabe's the woods are now filled with rifle hunters that are just looking for an extra 2 weeks of hunting they wouldnt have if they had to use sidelock caplocks or flintlocks. It has kinda taken the fun out of being out there relatively alone except for likeminded primative hunters. They seem to be quite amused at my long green capote made from a Whitney blanket., winter mocs and wool touque.

With those parts you have the right stuff. My personal flinter is homebuilt with a .50 Colrain swamped barrel, plain maple stock, and a Durs Egg Lock by LR. Its a Bucks county style which I think is more graceful than a Lancaster or some of the other schools. You will love that swamped barrel, makes a big difference in the balance and hold. My barrel is 38 inch which seems better for thick woods hunting than a full 44 inch.

Have gone out a few times since the day after Christmas. I saw forteen deer yesterday, no shot. I use a T.C. renegade flinter 58 cal. with the patched roundball.
