Heres the deal, I want a 280 bolt action rifle. The problem is that in order to afford a new toy right now, I need to sell off an old toy. The old toy is a stainless/synthetic 700 in 300 win mag. Ive shot four deer with the 300wm and carried it on my only elk hunt so far. I bought the 300 about 8 years ago when I thought I needed a big thumper to kill an elk. I now realize that elk are not bullet proof and a 280 is very capable of killing elk and a lot of other critters with less fuss (recoil and powder) than the 300wm. In fact all four deer could have been easily killed with a lesser gun. Did I mention that I really hate to sell off guns. So what should I do, sell off the 300 and start looking for a 280? Or wait and start saving my pennies until I can afford to keep the 300 and also add a 280 to the stable? I realize this is rifle loony thinking and pretty trivial in real world terms but what do you all think???????

I understand all too well. Actually thinking of pawning off a couple rifles myself and I really don't relish the idea either, even though I don't see them getting much playing time anytime in the future. What makes things worse I see both rifles you mention being a natural part of a rifle loonies inventory
I guess, if the recoil is getting bothersome, sell the Winnie and get the .280, if not then save those pennies

I feel your pain! (I just made that up )
I sold my .270 to buy my .300 WinMag against all the "you will regret it" advice I got. I love the .300 but miss the .270. Will probably get another rifle in the .270 class (.280, 7-08, 30-06) sometime but I think I'll get a coyote rifle (.243 or .223) first.
I need to find something to do between elk seasons.

George,
You pretty much nailed it. The 300 doesnt see much use anymore. When I want to pound away for fun I take the 25-06. I shot two deer with it this year and they are just as dead as those I shot with the 300. But I just flat hate to see an old friend go. Of course, if the 300 goes down the road and a 280 comes home that leaves the door open for a 338-06!?!?

I am glad to see others face the same decision. My solution was to wait until I could afford another rifle and I bought a Weatherby VanGuard 308 synthetic and stainless which my daughtor promptly claimed (she has killed two deer with it). So I waited again and bought a Weatherby 308 SMOA synthetic and stainless and finally retired the old 1976 Rugar M77 7 Mag. Killed a huge 3 point with the new 308 this year in the coast range of CA. As you can tell, I decided to keep the Mag (now a vry reliable back up if something happens) and waited until I could afford to buy another rifle, but that is just me.

I don't see the logic in keeping the 300WM if it's not going to be used much and just sit around collecting dust. If it can serve a useful purpose of helping to fund the purchase the .280Rem, then go for it. The .280 sounds like its going to get used more often anyways, and as you indicated with less fuss and recoil. One caveat, I'm not a rifle looney, as you can probably tell so you are forewarned about my advice

If a Remington 700 is your action of choice, you would be ok to keep the 300 win and start putting back $10 bucks a week.
Remington has a habit of droping the ball on calibers with their headstamp. Right now I think the only platform they offer the 280 in is the Detachable Mag. Mountian Rifle. That's a cryin shame, the 280 is a wonderful round.
By the time you have your money saved, maybe just maybe Remington might offer it in a CDL or better yet SS version. Won't hold my breath.

GB,
The 280 will most likely be a 700 althought I did have a nice ruger 270. I'll probably keep the 300 and start saving for the 280. What I really want they don't offer anymore, Stainless 280 mtn rifle. For what it's worth they do offer the 280 in the CDL. Nice rig, just not what I'm looking for.

I understand. I just have a hard time parting with perfectly good rifles. I've only sold one firearm in all my life, and it was actually a Beretta 96 pistol that I traded in for a Beretta 96 Elite.
And who knows? One day that .300 winmag might be desired or needed again....

Perhaps a better way to go is take small steps. Get a donor action once you've collected enough moola, then do the PacNor thing then a stock. At least with this method, you get WHAT you want and can see progress along the way! Just a thought.

Selling a gun is taboo. Unless its a dire emergency cash liquidation situation. Round up all of those old power tools in you garage that you never use and sell them on ebay. If you ever need another one of those buy them cheap at a pawn shop. Did I already say, don't sell your guns unless you have to? Especially one you whacked an Elk with.

j elky,
The CDL 280 was a limited run. It is not cataloged on their website.
I learned my lesson years ago about putting firearms on the CC.....but if I found one in CDL.....well I might
No SS in 280 makes no sense to me.

George,
Ive thought about that exact thing. I love the idea, just not sure I have the patience to wait that long. My recipe would be along these lines, SUCKS donor action with matte black DuraCoat, stainless custom barrel at 22 in a contour one step up from a mtn rifle in either a Bansner or McSwirly and top it with a leupy. At the rate Im paying for daycare it might take me three years to get it done.

J-good luck on your decision.
I would say if you're going to a light rifle to go Bansner and not Mickie. The mickie's are nice but just too heavy for mtn rifles.

Jeff Here's a thought. Have the 300 mag sent off to someone like Mickey Coleman and have the action blueprinted and rebarreled to 7m/m Rem.Mag. It's like a 280,only on steriods. Course you can download it to lesser levels if you handload. Save up a get a good stock down the raod and you have a reasonable priced custom rifle...

James ... You're a friggin' genious Best idea so far AND 7 RM ammo is far more plentiful than 280 ammo

Simply pick up reloading dies and equipment for the 300 WM. Start reloading and keep the pressures down and use lighter bullets. That will give you the softer recoil while still maintaining decent trajectory. Just because you have a "Magnum" doesn't mean you have to load it full throttle. While you are loading, shooting and hunting with your 300, you can be saving for your new 280! Besides, you will really want to be a reloader to make the 280 all it can be.
