Well, done for now with this project (now for getting it to shoot straight, which likely is at least 50% me getting used to the brassy bead sight). Thanks for all the suggestions, tips, and comments. I thought I owed you at least a before and after photo. BEFORE: [img:left] http://fdiepstraten.tripod.com/webonmediacontents/_MG_9263s.jpg?1343437752024[/img] AFTER: [img:left] http://fdiepstraten.tripod.com/webonmediacontents/_MG_0236s.jpg?1343437906377[/img] Mind you, the blueing is not as good as it appears on the photo... under strong light (e.g. direct sun) you can see brown through the blue... somehow the conversion from brown rust to blue was never uniform. Nice job of work.
A word of caution to lurkers- this doesn't give you carte blanche to go nuts refinishing all the nicely worn/patina'ed examples of 100 year old Savages out there. This man had a reason to, and he did a nice job.

I agree! :-) This one had suffered at the hands of a phillistine, who had roughly filled the rear sight slot with solder, and crudely sanded it. The finish on the stock had dissolved where excessive oil had dripped out of the action, and the stock had been refinished before, judging from the crude sanding marks and rounded off edges. Thanks for all the nice comments. Frans
