Just got done making another batch of Bread and Butter pickles tonight using cukes from my small garden. In spite of the mini drought we are having I have been getting a really nice crop of both types of cucumbers that I planted.

The ones I made two weeks ago really taste good, as do the kosher dills I made as well (lots of garlic).

Anybody else making pickles.

Made 40 pints of bread and butters so far. Just used a Mrs Wages mix bought at WalMart that you add sugar and vinegar to. Added some pickle crisp after jarring and they taste great.

We used that Mrs. Wages mix from WalMart as well. Don't think a person could tell the difference between homemade pickles or store bought. Very delicious.

Haven't tried the "pickle crisp", what is it and does it work..?

Just saw your question-

Probably within a few feet of the pickle mix at Wal-Mart or other canning retailer, there will be a small plastic container, coffee cup size, of 'pickle crisp'. Its a little granulated pellet, 1/8 teaspoon per pint I believe is what is called for. Supposedly makes your pickles crisper.

I wish now I'd done a jar without as a comparison.

Been out of cukes for a while, but I'll sure give it a shot next year for comparison...

Did 1 outta 3 jars with the pickle crisp this go around. We'll find out when they get ready.
Also tried a pint O' pickled peppers in the same B&B type brine as well .

We do a 11 day pickle, and they turned out great. Planning to pickle some okra tonight.
