any one have a favorite to recomend ? just started looking and want one that isn't too heavy and that has a blade that you could actually field dress with in a pinch , don't need a lot of gadgets , just the ones you might need most often when hunting or fishing .

ditto on leatherman for quality . i once did some odor control work in the original faCTORY IN PORTLAND, ORE.& at that time in 1982 they were making machines to shoot tennis balls out ---a training device. from fertile minds amazing diversity often springs. we all know the story of the invention of the glock.--cranky72

I carry a Gerber...It has a needle nose pliers. I bought the needle nose, because I was, and still use it for fishing, and anything else needing a grip, or cut.

The knife blade is sharp, really sharp, and stays that way, much better than I ever thought it would. I have cleaned deer, and only needed a couple stitches myself, when finished blush Fortunately, it was sharp enough, it didn't hurt much.

The pliers are real, as well...I have checked them out quite extensively.

They aren't loaded with gadgets, but have all the necessities, as far as I am concerned...can opener, philips, and slotted screwdrivers, etc.

The other thing I really likeabout the Gerber, is one handed opening...take it out of the sheath, give it a flick, and the pliers come out. Then the accessories have slide locks, so once open, they won't close up on your fingers, in the case of the knife, will save you some blood loss, and most likely less stitches over time laugh

I had a leatherman, new in the late 80's, and was just never as impressed with it, as I am the Gerber. I have since lost it, it never got used as much as the Gerber.

I own a SOG paratool and a Leatherman supertool 300. I would not miss the SOG; I'll never be without a leatherman again.

I have an original Leatherman and received a Gerber like this one years ago as a present. I never use the Leatherman, the Gerber is lighter and easier to use to me. The Gerber has a nicer grip when using the pliers too.
