I am a longtime Swift fan, and you would not go wrong with that. However, recently Ive really enjoyed fast twist 223. I've gotten good accuracy with standard 50-55 stuff but like being able to shoot 75 Amax stuff too. It easy on the ears and neighbors plus it's easy on powder with tons of options. I've pretty much gone to 6mm stuff for my "big" guns and like the 223 for my 0-400ish stuff. Mark

awww if you are a velocity nut... I've seen a few 22.250s necked down to 20 caliber...
and one necked down to shoot those 19 caliber bullets by Calhoon... I am sure the barrel life sucks...
but what the hey, its the price tag for having fun...

My 22-250's have been ignored since I built my first 6mmbr. With the 6br it seems you have to work to get it not to shoot. Mine have spoiled me. I shoot a lot of 222 and 223, and really enjoy them, but when it's time to step up a notch I skip the 22-250 and go with the 6br. Good Luck, Rick

I think the 243 Winchester is the best varmint cartridge.
What with the wide range of bullets it can shoot from 55 grs to over 100 grs it can act like a .22 yet be legal for bigger game.
A while ago the gun writers were pushing for a new cartridge to sell more rifles. They said that the 22-250 was so special and more accurate than the Swift. They won out and the 22/250 seems to be more popular.
So it goes.
All guns should be locked up when not in use!

Wanna go custom...or something otta the box ??
My summer job is shootin' p/dogs....
All somewhat custom rigs...Savage s/shot with heavy Pac Nor
tubes..minimum weight is 15#...calibers...20 Vartarg..20
Practical...20BR..223 AI....6BR...6XC....6.5x55...oh yea a
stock Savage 17M2 HB...glass includes mainly Vortex PSTs...4200
& 6500 Tacticals...Weaver Tacticals...knobs are nice....If a
guy was wanting an all around repeater varmint rig...get a 223
with quick twist...more experienced reloader ?? Build a 20
Practical barrel & screw it on your favorite SA Savage...or
Remington....either of these two rds will drop any varmint
we have out there...using 223 brass which has an endless supply

Well, I have a couple of .223 bolt guns. I have a couple of .220 Swifts. I have a .204. Just me, but I have a definite want of Ruger 1Bs in .22 Hornet and .218 Bee. I have a long-time itch for an old-school 700BDL Varmint in .222. And I suppose one of the days I should get a .22-250 and build a chunk .223 AI and .243 with fast twist tubes, just so I can be one of the kewl kids...

Wow Tikkanut, it must be tough to have a summer job like that.
The only problem I have had with having several good shooting PD rifles is that I wound up shooting 1 or 2 and the rest stayed home or in the pick-up. It finally boiled down for me 223 for most of the shooting. I have 2 so could shoot one for a while and then the other.
If I was buying a factory gun it would be a 204. Friends who have one say it is a 600 yard gun for them.
If building one it would be the 20 Practical. The same ballistics as the 204 but uses 223 brass.
I hear that some people are stuck on the 223IMP. A little retro. but I hear the bullets still create the red mist.

Oh, yeah... I forgot. If you have a bunch of 25-20 single shot cases lying around, the R2 Lovell.
As I said above, I'm old.

Well IMO there's only two kinds of people the ones that have a .220 swift and them that don't.... Why fight it the swift is the King. Make it more fun and change the twist and have a ball. Mine shoots 55gr.'s beautiful with the stock 1-14....later

Grandpa thought his .257 Weatherby was one heck of a rifle for ground squirrels. I agree... So is the .25-06... He also had a .219 Zipper on a Winchester single shot action. My son and I have enjoyed using the good old 6mm Remington for a long time too. The past few years I've grown real fond of the little .204 Ruger. It just keeps on delivering great accuracy, great performance on varmints, and pretty much without recoil. Also has a very modest appetite for powder, which is kind of nice. Just a few thoughts. Guy
