In some of the shops I frequent and even on GunBroker it appears people are giving away the 325 WSM's...

In particular, there are great deals on Montana's and Winchester EW's to be had.

Not really trying to compare to the 30-06' but I'm thinking with 200 grain bullets in mind.

Thoughts?

My 325wsm will shoot 200gr AccuBond's @ 2950fps. This hunting bullet has a B.C. of .450

There are few instances where buying a gun based on price alone turns out to be a good idea. My first question would be "What are you hunting?".....although you did mention using the 30-06 as a benchmark. If your shots will rarely exceed 300yds then I think the 325/8mm WSM, like so many other cartridges, will take care of business with ease. The bigger issue becomes ammo availability. Now, if you reload this is a non-issue as bullet selection is good enough and brass could be made from 300 WSM if necessary. If you don't reload I would pass on the cartridge. Otherwise, go grab yourself a deal on a gun.

I think a 325 in a Montana would be a pretty sweet combo. Thinking it would make for a nice woods walking whitetail rifle.

My Montana .325 whacked two elk for me with authority. It's an excellent cartridge for normal hunting. Not so great for long range (500+).

I really like the 200-gn Nos Accubond. The 180 and 200 TSX also shot well for me, as did the 200 Partition.

Fifth, I do reload so no concern there. That is one reason I'm thinking of the cartridge. The other reason is the slamming deals I have been finding around. I figure I can convert to 7 WSM if I feel I want to.

I'm yet to kill an animal past 300 yards. Just don't have long range opportunities where I hunt...

Mainly hunt deer, bear. Hopefully moose one day If my number gets drawn....

A friend and his Dad both have 325's and love them. I recently picked up a Kimber Classic in 325 and didn't have any trouble getting to a good load. It doesn't shoot Accubonds at all, but does like 200 Partitions, 195 Hornadys and 196 Norma Oryx's:

JGray,

Looks like you have a winner there for sure. I can't make it out from the picture, but are you using the 200 NPT's with H4350?

Thanks

My Kimber 325wsm has killed 7 caribou, 1 black bear, 3 or 4 deer all of them were shot with TSX 180's . All were one shot kills but one caribou shot him two times but didn't need too....

It's a long story, with an embarrassing amount of rifle loonyism involved, and a gun safe churning it's way towards some sort of sanity. With me at the handle of the churn, that's a dicey proposition.

In short, I started practicing at long range a few years ago, and decided I'd MOST like my Montana to be my open-country rifle. I couldn't justify another Montana. I have a kickass .338 that is perfect for much of my elk hunting. AND, I have a .325 BLR, which is a very handy rifle and so I still have a .325. Soooo.... I sent the Montana off to Pac-Nor and had them install a Supermatch 7 WSM barrel.

I'm not saying it makes sense. But that's what happened. smile

I found .325 recoil in a Montana (or my BLR for that matter) to be very manageable. No big deal.

I'd say get one (especially if it's an EW)....You only live once... wink

Jeff, not much makes sense to a rifle loony except for getting another rifle....By the way, you really need a 9.3x62...trust me... whistle wink. If my 338 didn't shoot so well and it didn't have memories and battle wounds from all the miles of elk hunting we've done together, I'd send it packing and the 9.3 would be doing all the dirty work from now on...I'm with the OP on getting a 325 wsm though...What harm would there be in it?? grin

If you want to shoot a 200 rain bullet at the 325WSM velocity of 2950 fps maybe you could convert your 30/06 to a 300 Winchester Magnum. But if you just want a new rifle, then go for it!
