November 14, 1974. I was fourteen at the time. We were hunting at a dog hunting club in Allendale, S.C. It was family day and my mom was there along with my dad and younger brother. My mom and I got dropped off on a spot together and shortly thereafter the drivers turned the dogs out.
The dogs began to roar away from us, but just then I heard something coming through the broomstraw. I looked up to see a small doe bouncing straight for me. I quickly shouldered the Remington 1100 loaded with buckshot and shot twice; I then saw a tail going the other way and shot twice more. When the gun came down I didn't see a deer and did not know if I had connnected. I had missed about ten deer prior to this one, shooting mostly in the trees and such. Suddenly, I saw a piece of broomstraw start moving back and forth and I figured the deer was down and kicking. Scared to go take a look for fear that my dream of killing a deer had not really come true, I summoned my mom to go "look" for me. She walked into the broomstraw and suddenly yelled "you got one"! I was so nervous she had to drag it out to the road for me.
My mom has passed now but this is certainly a fond memory of her that I will never forget.

I was 12. 11/17/74 near Tilly, Arkansas. Used my uncle's Remington 742 in 30.06. 50 yard neck shot on a huge 6 point buck. I have killed over 100 whitetails the past 38 years but that one provides the most vivid memory even today. I had a hunting story to share with the men around the campfire from that day forward.

I was 20 - killed a spike and a doe in 1976 on my first deer hunt using my then new Winchester Super-X Model 1 shotgun and W-W Super-X slugs; I was a 2LT stationed at APG, MD.

15. Doe with a bow after a whole 15 minutes in the blind. couldn't imagine how my dad ever came home empty handed. Same year, little spike with a .308. This deer hunting stuff was easy! It was only later I figured out dad wasn't in it for the killing, though the eating was a factor.

14 I think. There weren't any deer here to speak of back then. They had just started coming back from when they were planted in the western part of the county in the late 30's. I hunted two years and never saw anything but tracks. I was up in a tree watching a natural opening in the woods when a little fork horn stepped out. Shot the sucker behind the shoulder with a M70 fwt 270. Using factory iron sights. I'd worked all summer to buy that rifle, cost me $94 bought through a relatives general store. Didn't have enough to buy a scope. A Lyman All American came the next year. Deer fell and then I started to shake. Couldn't unclimb that tree. Pop got there coming to the shot from over the hill. About all I could do was point and grunt. We got it out though and it was the second deer kill in the family. Pop had shot one in 1938 and mine was the second. 1954.

First deer was a doe in 1970 at age 14. Taken with one shot using a Winchester 30-30 carbine and open sights.

I shot a buck first, then two does (don't tell my Dad; I was supposed to shoot ONE doe first). Oh well, I think I've done all the work ever since...
I don't shake until after they're down either, Boggy. Good trait to have!

16 years old.First morning hunting deer.Dad wasn't a hunter but he bought me a 30-30 Marlin and got me a spot in a camp in Northern Ontario.
The 8 point crossed a beaver dam behind me coming into our drive.I remember taking a bead on his reflection in the pond.I didn't lead him and shot out his femoral artery.
I didn't shot another deer with that Marlin again until 2 seasons ago . A 41 year gap.

I was 12. It was a 7 point in front of a pack of hounds. That was 23 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday.
