Has anyone ever tried a Gheenoe boat? I am thinking about selling my shallow 12' v-hull to get one of these. Look like a slick little craft. h

I had a 15' something inch Gheenoe in my early years with a 9.9 Johnson onboard. I covered a BUNCH of ground with it. They can get you in trouble if you aren't a little careful, but they can also get you into a bunch of neat places.

Steeelhead, Did the trouble come from too much motor? I have a 9.9 HP envinrude on that 12' V-hull and it can be squirley to run. 9.9 HP seems ike too much for a gheenoe though.
Do they paddle well?

I had the same experience with the Riverhawk (same boat as Gheenoe), I didn't think that it was particualarly suited for travel at speed.
I liked my Carolina Skiff J 12, it would handle a 15 with ease.

Oh the 9.9 moved it along quite well, and yep that is probably what got me in trouble. Of course I was 20 when I bought it so there was no fear then......

They are really where you want to use a canoe, but want some stability to stand up and pole or use a fly rod, or use a 3 HP motor to cover open water on the way. They are just a wide, stable canoe. Neat boats. See them all over the GA, FL and SC.

I have never owned one but I see these Gheenoe boats running around the Ten Thousand Island area of the Everglades everyday. Most are powered by 25 to 40 hp outboards and operated by gray haired retirees. The models they are running can't be that squirrelly, they just seem too popular in the area. The ones I am seeing are more of the 15 to 16 foot variety and are in open gulf waters when I see them. Other than a wide variety of high end flats boats the local guides are running the Gheenoe probably dominates the area for brand name of boat most often seen on the water.

The ones I've used were the 13' and 15' which are more like wide canoes. I had no idea they built a boat with a 40 hp rating, learn something new every day.
