To the knife makers I pose a question. If you were going to make a knife for yourself, and wanted the best of the best steel, which one would you pick. I understand lesser priced steel can be heat treated to perform extremely well, but am wondering what you would pick. I was looking at BG42 and the Cowry X and Y, and was wondering what some of you professional would pick.
God Bless,
MM

I have tried it all from cpm15v to talonite and my all time favorite is Jerry Halfrich's cpm154cm.

I'll say this, my buddy Rick is damned consistent. Rightfully so too, it really is all about the heat treat. Of course I got the secret recipe on 154 from the master himself. I have a "special" recipe for Elmax that I'm dyin' to try one of these days.

in fairness to menefee i have to mention that many of the new alphabet alloys have yet to be ran thru the trials of hunting in polar regions, so really a lot of hunters dont know how elmax & m390 perform at 60 derees below zero. another aspect i would imagine you can buy 154cm even in india ; probably not so with the 3rd gen. powder alloys. of all the stainless alloys i've tested most ,rick's 154 has been superb.---cranky72

I'd just make myself some killer tool steel Damascus and that knife would do everything I could ever image a knife being required to do. It's not the steel - it's the heat treatment.
In the words of Jerry Rados, "Jesus Christ, Himself, could send a bar of steel down from Heaven. It will only be as good as the heat treatment it gets on Earth."

I have a knife that Todd Fischer made for me from S90V. It seems like a pretty special steel.

Thanks for all the replies, getting a feel for what the best of the best is, really appreciate the experience and the passing down of knowledge. I found out the other day that a professional heat treatment facility was right down the road, less than 40 minutes away. I think I have seen the guy's name on here actually, Peters Heat treating. He offered to take me on a tour once I get enough knives built for him to treat. Seems as though I really don't need to worry too much about the really high dollar steel, as I do the treatment it gets. Lucky to have the guy nearby.

For a hard use knife, heard many good things about the toughness of L-6. YMMV

At this point I can't help myself, not to say You guys are pulling your chains with this, this steel, that steel BS
Its the grind of the blade that will determine weather it cuts good & how it cuts And the heat treat will determine how good it can hold the edge
Remember, knife steel GURU'S,the harder the steel is,yeah it might hold an edge a little longer, than the next, but once you dull it out,it may be a PITA to get re sharpened
I look for the happy medium, and ATS-34,440C,154CM,CPM154CM,440V,BG-42 all great blade steels to mention a few
Website : New website coming soon thanks for your patience

How many of you guys have experience with Bg-42? Whats it like to work with and how does it compare to the others if heat treated well?
