I found one of these for sale in our local classifieds for $225, which includes the factory box. I have done some research and by all accounts these were an accurate little rifle. Does anyone here have any hands on experience with one? I would love to hear some more reviews before I decide to buy it.

The whole Remington 580 series were very accurate, sort of a miniature 788 with multiple locking lugs and a crisp trigger. The 581 is the clip magazine fed style. In excellent condition and with the original box, it might be worth $225.

I've got two and both are wonderfully accurate. For a new in box, or very clean in box, $225 is very fair. Our last one, a lefty, shot 10 rounds of CCI Green Tag into a .5" cluster at 50 yards recently. Buy it, you won't regret it.

Had three of these... two 581's and a 581-s. They shoot quite well... they would do around 5/8" at 50 yards with preferred ammo, got into CZ's which shoot just a little bit better, but not enough to get excited about.
Only pox on them is that the 5 round magazines are no longer available, but I believe the ten rounders still are.

Isn't Jim Wisner making metal mags for the 581-541 rifles now?

Stoney,
The metal mag's that I am aware of are for the Rem. 511 and they are still avail. from Brownell's, etc. The 581's use the plastic magazines. Hope you are right though that someone is making mag's for the 581's.

I bought a used but not abused 581 last year for the same price and have no regrets at all. Jump on it and don't look back.
I could wish a lot of things on my worst enemy but neuropathy ain't one of them.

I have had a 381-S and it shot great and was good looking. I needed some money, so I sold it for $350.00 ten years ago. I have a 540X target rifle made from the same action. It is a great shooter. If I had a chance to buy one for $225.00, I would jump on it!

They shoot ridiculously well. I have experience with both the tube and magazine fed ones.

I agree with the consensus. A 582 was my first rifle ever and isn't going anywhere. Even with a cloudy little rimfire scope it will shoot 10 shot one-hole groups at 25yds and into a half inch at 50 yards all day long. It isn't finicky about ammo either, shooting almost everything well. Great rifles.

I dropped a 581 into a gorgeous 541 stock and mounted a Weaver Nitrex 3-15 in Burris rings. Shoots .5 at 50yds using Wolf match.

http://www.outbackgunparts.com/Specials.htmlHere's the link for the metal 541/581 metal magazines......wish they would hurry. They're supposed be making a flush mount......that'd be nice, I hate a magazine that hangs down like the one on my 581. Have both a 580 and a 581; love them both. Got the 581 as a Christmas gift from my parents in 1976. 580 581

My only b!tch with the 581 is the plastic magazines. I have two of the 5 shot type, but will buy the metal mag when they start to ship. If you want to dress up a 581, the 541 stocks come up on E-bay regularly. IIRC I paid about $75 for a really nice stock.
