Gota buddy that not longer has a 270 and is wondering if I can take his left over 270 brass to 30-06 for his only hunting rifle. Looks like it should be a piece of cake when looking at cartridge specs but thought I'd ask here in case there is something you guys have seen thats a problem.

yes you can but the 270 win case has a bit longer neck than any other case build on the -06 family of cases so youll need to trim them back to 30-06 specs.

It should work, but I just can't see spending the time and effort necessary to convert brass of one common caliber to another common caliber.
I prefer to have brass in common calibers with the correct headstamp. Too easy for mishaps with near diameter cartridges.

I agree with MS here.
Too much hassle to form one of the most commonly available pieces of brass out there. Once fired 30-06 brass is plentiful and cheap. Or try to swap your (his) 270 brass for 30-06 brass.
It's different when you "need" to form brass, or you're making something that is normally expensive in factory form, but to intentionally spend time and effort on forming 30-06 brass? I'd pass.

Doesnt seem like much work....figure I lube case necks and plunge the over the eliptical expander of a hornady neck die...then into a fl die and trim. Id probably trim for uniformaty anyhow so the only extra step is a plunge over the expander...probaby an investment of 5 mins per 20 brass. Unless someone thinks the result isnt good. His only hunting rifle now is the 06 and hes been around reloads enough I dont see him mixing things up.

"He" is not the only one who could "mix things up". Should some one else try using one of his 270 marked rounds in a 270 and there is a 30 cal bullet in the round----not good. Actually the 270 is not the son of the 06.. They are brothers that were developed from the 30-03 (which had the long neck).
When necking down, a smaller bullet in a larger bore will not blow your head off. A tad safer to have around.
To answer your question, yes it can be done without too much difficulty. jmho Tim

I don't see how you'd ever get a 30-06 to chamber in a .270. The bullet and neck diameters are just too large. A 7mm-06, on the other hand, might chamber in a .270. That's why they moved the shoulder forward on the .280.
My personal opinion is life is too short to go through that hassle. 30-06 brass is so common and available, and will have the right headstamp.
If you're talking about hundreds of cases, try to see if someone would swap some 30-06 brass for that .270 brass. If it's just dozens of cases, it's not worth the bother.

Working as a range officer, we had a guest who was having noticeable trouble at his shooting bench. On investigation, found that he had a 280. He wanted to try some different weight bullets so he had 270, 280 and 30-06 ammo--"CAUSE YOU ALL KNOW THEY ARE ALL MADE FROM 30-06 BRASS". He had fired a 270 and 280 rounds , but was having a little trouble chambering the 06 round. Had we not stopped him, I am sure he would have applied enough force to chamber and fire that 06 round. If it can be done it probably will, good idea or not. jmho Tim

OK...thanks for the input. Only did one to check it out. Works very ez. Plunge the 270 brass over the expander...run it through my 30-06 redding body die and .....voilla......done. But it does need a trim. Necks thin down just a tad but may actually reduce expander pull when resizing next time. I'll let it up to him if he wants it that way. I understand the safety ideas of changing vrs headstamp.

I've reformed lots of .270 cases to .35 Whelen and 7x57. I anneal them first, and use RCBS case lube.
