Inqwe please weigh in here, your service dog experience would be much appreciated. I rescued a three old Beagle female, all in all a decent little dog. However when told to "come" sometimes she treats it as a suggestion and not a command. This is driving me nuts, any suggestions? Also how does one train a dog to stop and drop in their tracks?

A lot to learn here.
www.retrievertraining.net
Ask away. Lots of good people there.
Also training dvd's are very helpful.
I'm no expert by anymeans, and won't even try to explain what i have learned thru that site and dvd's.
It just takes time and patience. A little at a time.
Let the dog tell you what pressure it can handle.

I love beagles, but you have your work cut out for you when it comes to training. At least they aren't bassets. smile

Didnt catch this earlier...my computer is in the shop...but Max Von Stephanis said it best 100 years ago....

"Come" Should be a release command. To the dog it should mean you may come to me now...not you must come to me now..."

If you can read between the lines and extrapolate a bit...this is basically all you need to know about dog training.

You're probably right, but it seems a little Zen for us.

Now to work on it.

Yep! You make yourself the MOST interesting and the MOST fun thing in that dog's world. Anytime, anyplace that he comes when called he should be rewarded. Period. ( even if you just called him off chewing up your $3000 leather couch...) grin

BTW....Beagles ARE a challenge...they were bred to hunt in front of you, independently.

Take that into account....

Tom-
Having grown up with several rabbit-hunting beagles, I had to chuckle at the basic question in this thread, and also just had to modify your response to match my experiences. grin

Pursuit may be, it seems to me, perfect without possession.

Yep Bob...I get a kick out of most questions I get...

" My Jack Russell keeps digging holes in the back yard...what'll I do?"
"
"My Blue Heeler keeps nipping at my feet when I'm not looking...what'll I do?"

And so on....many folks do not take into account "breed characteristics" grin

I freely admit that this Beagle is taking me to school. I'm learning that she'll do about anything I ask, as long as she thinks its her idea. (Kinda like my wife.) Notice I said ask, firm, constant persistance seems to be the key. She really seems to want to please and seems to be fairly "foregiving" of my training screw-ups. The journey continues.
In my IP I wanted to be able to stop her in her tracks for her own protection, from running in front of a car etc, but I'm learning that when the nose goes down, all else goes off. Thanks again for all of the advice and information, I'm sure I'll have more questions.

You learn quickly Grasshoppuh.... grin

I tell my students if they don't learn more from their dogs than they do from me, then they are doing it wrong...

ingwe,
So true, I just hope that I can remember all I have learned from the many dogs over the years. A new Black Russian Terrier pup is coming home tomorrow. Not really a hunting dog, a working dog.

Don't get her till tomorrow, will put a few up. Most folks have no idea what this breed is. Not what one would think. Red Army Kennels in 1950's Russia needed a guard dog, this was what they came up with.
