Hey. Well I just scored 2 99's I've been wanting a 243 and a 284, and there's really only one left that I want, a 358. I have 2 308's. Is it feasable to rebore one to 358? I think I would pick the C model instead of the F model. Has anyone here had a 308 rebored to 358? What can I expect to pay? Also, this being a clip model, will the clip be OK with 358 ammo? Thanks...Mike
Of the two, I would do the clip feed. You would probably need to make sure ammo feeds through the clip. More intelligent people than will add more to this than I can.
The guy at this place does great work. I have had two of his rifles and both have been very accurate. He is reasonable as well. http://35caliber.com/

The detachable magazines for the 99C/CD are much less demanding when you change cartridges. A 99C/CD magazine for the 243/250/308 will work fine with the 358. I have seen 99Fs in 358 that had been rebarreled from 243 and 308 without changing the rotor. Some would allow you to fill the magazine and some would only allow 3 rounds in the magazine without jamming. When I wildcat a 99, it is almost always with a 99C/CD action.
J.E.S. specializes in 35 cal rebore, I have one of their 99 (originally 308E) rebored to 358 (acquired recently from DiamondJim above. I have yet to develop a load for it, but it feeds and cycles fine out of a crummy westfield rotor.

I'll give 1 HUGE vote for J.E.S. He did my 22-250 to 338 Federal job on a Remington 700 LVSF. The paper speaks for itself...with factory ammo. Shoots better as 338 Federal than it did a 22-250!
No reason to be a jerk about it. You wanted to know about the possibility of a rebore. JeffG said J.E.S. specializes in .35 rebores. I was simply showing that he does good work and the 22-250 and 308 are the same cartridge family as the 338 Federal and 358 to do the rechamber and rebore.
Did you happen to notice that I wasn't replying to your post?
I have heard nothing but good things about JES and spoke to him about reboring a Savage 99 to 338 Fed a couple of years ago. I didn't go forward with the work at Mr. Occumpaugh's recommendation, as told me that he had done a couple of 338 Fed rebores in Savage 99s and the owners were seeing high pressue signs with factory ammo.
That said, note that the primary problem with rechambering/reboring a Savage 99 with a rotory magazine is the magazine, so comparing the conversion of a Remington 700 to a rotory magazine Savage 99 is a classic case of apples and oranges.
Well it sounds like it's feasable, but what's the cost? I think I'd like to take my "C" and have 4" cut off and rebored to 358. That would be a great little gun for the thick stuff, huh?
IIRC, JES charges around $250 for a rebore/rechamber job. www.35caliber.com
I think that I'd keep the 22" barrel for balance and to keep the muzzle blast farther away from my ears. A 99C with an 18" barrel is likely to be seriously butt-heavy, handly length but poorly balanced.
