My montana groups about as well without a scope so, in my case, most anything would be an improvement. My question is, if it's such a POS, why do you still have it? Hell, tell you what, I'll give you $700.00 right now for it just so we can quit listening to your bitching and moaning. That outta be oodles for scrap metal and plastic!

For less than $300.00 shipped I'd get the new Leupold VX-2 3-9X40. It's light, bright, and awesome. 10.8 ounces of goodness.

3-9/3.5-10x40's are ridiculously large and out of place on the petite MT 308. Mine have always worn either a 2.5-8x36 or 2-7x33. The 6x36 works well too. 2-7x33: 2.5-8x36: 6x36:

2-8 Leo w/M1 on top Just add some time in the hills and fill up some arks Dober Mark-- on a practical level, awesome! Visually I really can't like a 2.5-8 w/M1. I'm likely to go CDS.

Awesome pics Brad. Nearly the same position and a few different seasons wrapped up in Montana goodness. Appreciate all the ideas. the 2.5-8 and 3.5-10 are still my faves so far. I'm OK with the extra length. Saw a picture somewhere here of that rifle with the 3.5-10 on it and it looked fine - darn if I can find it now. The M1 turret though extremely functional, is a bit "out there". The CDS is much more streamlined. FWIW, I'm certainly not limiting myself to 200yds - in some areas it's just hard to see much further before you hit a big ol' bunch of mesquite. Thick stuff everywhere, with a few lanes thrown in for good measure. On the range and if I head out a bit further West, the distance can open up significantly.

My second choice,if weight were a MAJOR concern would be a Leupold VX2 2-7X33. That was my first choice for mine in 325 WSM. My second scope for it is a 3-9X40 VX II.

I cant like my 84M or my 8400 Montana with short, stumpy scopes top. The only 3 scopes Id ever put on would be a 3-9X40 VXI/2 , VX3 3.5-10X40, or my favourite FX3 6X42. Maybe a VX3 4.5-14X40 as well. That size of scope shoved far forward puts small precious amounts of weight into the front end of the rifle. 84M .223 with a VXI 3-9X40 and below a .270 Short Dog 8400 with FX3 6X42 with M1 elevation spinner-ma-jig Same guns but a better idea of scope positioning.. Same 84M .223 with a FX3 6X42 onboard.
