Hey bushy, I've found that a good set of snap ring pliers work great. Get the ones with the angled tips....Hope that helps.

I've been able to open them up enough using my fingers. Have also read that a little duct tape on the ends of the snap ring pliers helps prevent scratching the inside of the hood.

Got snap ring pliers and that let me get the hood onto the front end.
Then I covered it with folded paper towel and tapped with a hammer.
