I would like to here some thoughts on a couple of rifles I was considering for an entry/lightweight long range shooting rig. The two rifles in question are the win model 70 Extreme Weather and a Nula. As for the caliber, i was thinking 30.06. I'm probably not going to be shooting much past 600 yards. Would the Nula be to light for this purpose? I like the '06 but I am thinking about the 300 wsm as well.

Thanks in advance.

a 308 would be a good round for shooting stuff to that yardage and beyond...and have less recoil than the 06...not saying its excessive, but for target and the better part of hunting in the US you wouldnt be "undergunned"

.308 and 30-06 are some of the better "to school you" in the long range game.

Typically "light weight" and "ultra light weight" arn't the best to do said schooling with. Especially with calibers that "buck".

If you want light weight, I would probably go Tikka. If you have the dough for a NULA, I think you would like it. Hard to beat Melvin.
As for cartridge, 308, or for more bite, 7mag.

I think, therefore I am, conservative.

If I were thinking light weight, and long range, a 7mm/08 comes to mind for me. I'm learning that burning over 60gr of slow burning powder in a 7lb rig isn't all that fun laugh

If you are thinking about doing a lot of "long range" shooting with an 06, I'd atleast be thinking sporter weight personally. Like cocadori said, they buck pretty good and when they are extremely light they bite as well....Not to steer you away from the EW but I am so much more comfortable shooting my std wt pre 64 model 70 (which I just sold) and classic sporter 30-06 when it comes to shooting more than 50 rounds or more in one sitting. Good luck with your search. If you want a shooter 30-06, send me a pm and I might be able to hook you up.....I've got one sporter that I'm thinking about finding a new home for. It shoots better than my EW too.

Thanks for the suggestions. Im actually waiting on a tikka t3 lite stainless in 6.5 x55 so I'll see how I like that rifle ,if it shoots might have to consider another one.

You mentioned NULA in your o.p., a fine rifle to be sure, but for similar money I'd consider a GAP Non-typical in .308. It is still plenty light to hunt with the extra weight would make it more pleasant to shoot for extended sessions. But an entry level rifle it ain't, unless your entering at the top.

Three suggestions:

270 Weatherby Magnum or a 7mm WM with a 26" barrel

6.5-284 NORMA in a Savage Long Range Hunter rig

Couple of questions for you to consider... How light do you want to go? and do you reload? The NULA is quite a bit lighter than the EW. As Tanner indicated, weight affects recoil. If your gonna go light, go with something on a .308 case. If you reload, I'd go with a .260, 7mm-08 or .243, if you don't reload, the .308 would be the hands down winner for me, and even if you do reload, it's a great cartridge. There is nothing easier to get to shoot well than a .308, and it would be fine to 600. No matter which cartridge you decide on, be sure and get a rifle that has a twist rate capable of stabilizing the various VLD type bullets. As in another post, if you are willing to spring for a NULA and still want something not too heavy to hunt with, consider a GAP non-typical. Take a look at Scenar Shooter's post. He does some fantastic work with that rig. Another option that I would put on my short list would be a Cooper Phoenix.
