If my 6x scope is too much magnification for where I'm hunting I'll have my peep sight Savage 99 for that in my vehicle. I bring it as a back up when I hunt.

Yes, fast moving wildboar at close range for lack of orientation as to where I am on the boar.
You just can not win.
With a 2,5x you will find far off animals to small, with a 6x you will find animals close by to big and with a variable you are constantly worrying about your settings.
:-) That's when you pull the 45 S&W Mtn Gun out of your holster and unload it. Or at least that's what I'd do. 6x42 is perfect and the forgiving eye box makes it a winner on running game and closer shots. I can't find any fault.

If my 6x scope is too much manification for where I'm hunting I'll have Savage 99 in my vehicle. I have him as a back up when I hunt.
Fixed it for ya!

That I can recall, in the states for big game. No I don't feel that a 6 held me back. Though I do like more than that for the longer ranges.
4 yotes, and chucks no doubt many times it's not enough.
As well for coues deer in Sonora it'd be a big handicap many times.

Yeah, for varmints 6x often isn't enough. My post was strictly about big game, which is where most of these 6x threads head.
I certainly see how 6x might not be enough for Coues deer at longer ranges. Those little buggers blend in pretty well!

The fixed 6x Leupold is one of the few hunting scopes I use. They are fantastic for LW rifles.
I have missed two opportunities with a 6x. Specifically the MK 4 6x40. Both times were in failing light, one was running through the trees at about 40 yards in pouring rain and I just couldn't keep him in the field of view. The other was at 551 yards across a valley and the light, grass, and his color made him very hard to outline. I missed. Both times it was on the same buck. I later killed him a fixed 10x.
Out of hundreds of deer, only twice do I believe a fixed 6x was a detriment. They are one of the best pure hunting scopes for general use.

It appears there are few 'Fail to bag' by hunters using them.

Just wanted to get a little insight as although nothing is perfect, somehow I believe the 'anti-6x' guys are ill informed.
SO, if you ever FAILED to bag a big game animal using a Fixed 6x, chime in, details if you want. Thanks.
My first big game scope was a Weaver K-6....used it on a Rem 760 in .270....then used it on a Savage M-99 in .308 and then used it for prairie dogs on a M-70 in 225....never once wanted less scope and never once failed to bag my deer/other because of too much magniftication. I still have that scope on a .257 Roberts.....and yes....it's about right for that rifle too! Nothing wrong at all with a standard fixed 6X scope IMO....even in heavy woods hunting.

Using 6x - I've killed and witnessed from 15 - 300 yd kills on deer, not had an opportunity any further, yet. No doubt, back in the K-6 days, the 'early' ones I should say, a 6x was considered a usable varmint scope, not excessive, but often enough.
No doubt I have used more on varmints w/less eye strain - an M8 12x was my fav of all. That was for the hunting I was doing. It inc. very small pests and various distances. PD's w/a 225 speaks well of your shooting w/a 6x.

6x is a sweet spot in optics. If I could only have one scope it would be a 6x or would it?
Then again, having a Burris Sig 2-8x has convinced me that is the worlds most versatile range if you only had one. Better than 6x. Better all around than 3-9x if you get a quality well built scope. 2x is great in close and 8x is good for almost any reasonable hunting distance. Might not be optimum in all situations, but it is usable in all of them.
