#1B in .280 shooting 52 grs. of IMR4350 behind a Sierra 140 gr. GK...groups 3.5" with the forend screw tightened all the way down...able to cover the group with a quarter with the screw backed of 1/4 of a turn. Never ceases to amaze me!

That is interesting. I have a .223 that is pretty erratic off the bench. I will try that as well. The other night I was going to take it off just to see what happened to the groups.

I believe when it's that tight, you are compressing the forearm against the barrel AND the hanger,so funny stuff will happen. Bed the tip only and make sure it not hitting anywhere else. Also,be sure it not touching at the back at the front of the receiver.

Here's what Elmer Keith wrote in 1970:
The first Ruger single shot I received was in caliber .375 H&H. It shot well just as it came from the factory. >>Then, to see what would happen, I tightened the forend screw as far as it would go with a heavy screwdriver, >>Results, it simply walked right off the top of the target in 5 shots as the barrel warmed up.
The whole story can be found concerning his serial# 15 Ruger No.1 rifle here:
