Dan,
I don't want to lead you astray- just because it may be legal under the rules- doesn't mean that I would reccomend it!
Anything that is more complicated/ time consuming is going to be a detriment in a match- leads to getting befudled (easy for me to do anyway)- possibly cross-firing, not taking up the right position again or just having to deal with more of a condition change. A ML or a paper cartridge gun would have to have a significant accuracy advantage to overcome that for me. FWIW ...Dennis

Oh don't worry too much about me Dennis, though sometimes perhaps you should? I'm a plodder with such new technology as y'all are using. Have a couple of projects to iron out, and somebody keepin' an eye out for a "real rifle"(poor John Rigby is spinning in his grave)...I'll surely do a cartridge rifle before I even seriously consider anything so gadget-riddled as a ML at a Creedmore shoot.

Knowing there would be contention regarding accuracy advantages, perhaps some cocky disdain...I wouldn't try to beat all of them...just the one that laughed the hardest.

That's tough for a dyslexic Kelly. Try it a little louder....

Thanks for the replys! About 2-3K to get started.........looks like it will be a few more years before I can get started. The flame is just not burning hot enough for me to give up some other hobbies to try this one. Too bad though, what a neat sport, there are a few shoots within 100 miles of home, and deer, elk, antelope, and bears to be shot.....I'll just have to doe it with centerfire, archery, or muzzleloaders. Thanks again for all your info.

Of all the things that can happen...reading Muzzle Blasts last PM before bed, old issue...article on Slug guns, and other LR muzzle shooting... two part bullets? OMG, I'm going to gadget hell, I can see it coming!

Centreshot.

The cost of getting into BPC has been one of my concerns of putting off new shooters to the sport and fun of BPC and why I can see it will not take off here in Australia. If I was you I wouldn`t give up.

If you want to get started and have some fun, look at a Pedersoli [s/h or new]... When funds permit keep an eye out for a good set of second hand target sights. Shooters do upgrade their sights from time to time and you see them on the market. You can buy already cast projectiles from many sources [ie Buffalo arms]. If you went for a .45-70 you can get into cases and dies for a not too pricey sum and start loading BP. As funds permit later, you can then get into casting equipment/moulds etc. However there are ways to get out there and started that aren`t going to break the bank! The many modern repros you con use smokesless factory loads as well as your loaded BPC. If you weren`t going to shoot Silhouette, but have fun and hunt with BPC, H&R have a viable singleshot that is open to mods and cheap to start shooting BPC. The Ped or similar depending on specs should enable you to do both.

Later down the track if the bug has bitten, you can upgrade your rifle, add various moulds, upgrade your sights if you feel so and chase the big competition. If you so desire, it is easy to spend big bucks getting into serious competition set up. But to start off you, you can tackle it cheaper while you learn as you go... Good shooting.

cheers,

Cam...

ps check out - http://www.buffaloarms.com/ you can get an idea of new rifle prices and at times second hand. Also - cases, dies, cast bullets etc...

I'll stick by my post that you can get started for about the same cost as a new centerfire and leoupuld scope or less.
You won't be able to stand around yuppie name dropping, but you can be competitive.

the most expensive bullet there is isn't worth a plug nickel if it don't go where its supposed to.

I had a nice Roller, built up out of odds and ends, got rolling in BPCRS with it. ( pun intended) It was a pretty light barrel profile, and kicked like the proverbial mule, loaded with a Lyman 457125 510gr.

My dies were aquired, complete with smunge, and surface rust, for $2.00, cleaned up, and in some cases "tweaked", (made up custon sizer plugs, etc.)these Lee dies still see service today, in forming the .45 cal family. Had I known how effective the pan lubing method was, I probably wouldn't have bought the Saeco lube sizer......but did.

On a good day, I walked out of Tombstone Pawn, with a new in box Pedersoli '74 Sporter........for under $500. Someone was in the slammer, and bail money was required. I sold the roller to a friend, and ordered a Badger Barrel for it, and set up a good match grade reamer, in the proccess.

Admittedly, owning a small machine shop does give one a bit of an edge.

Nonetheless, I think Ranch 13 is on track, and wouldn't hesitate to recomend the " lean and mean" approach to gettin' started. I hear an awful lot of wind directly related to who just bought what, and how much it cost, etc., at these events. And regardless of how much gear some of 'em buy, they don't seem to shoot any better than some of us "Poor Boys".

Another qualifier .........it can't hurt a bit to be comin' over to BPCR from another game, and suitably equipped with Spotting scope, mat, shooters stool, and such.......I'd been shooting High Power, so there was no real expense entailed, in that area.

Centershot, I've been shooting BPCR for several years and have only spent a couple hundred dollars.
The catch 22 is that I haven't used my own rifle. If you can pair up with someone and share a rifle for a while it's the way to go. You shoot as a team - shooter/spotter anyhow, so if you can have a good enough buddy to share a rifle it can be a lot of fun. I think that if you talk around at enough matches you'll get offered a rifle to shoot or borrow. I've seen it happen a number of times. Offer to cast all of the bullets for someone and you'll probably get several offers! Then after you figure out if you want to get more serious you will know better what you want........................DJ

Remember this is all supposed to be for fun.......................
