I have a couple friends having nice Savage 99s, both owning excellent examples of collectible models having higher end values. Handling their rifles and discussions on the virtues of the 99 for hunting had me looking for a solid working pre-mil that I'd have no guilt using as a beater rifle. I decided to look for the most common model in a common chambering, being a pre-mil EG in 300 Savage. I didn't want a scope, so I looked for an older model with a time period aperture sight.

This is what I found to fit my bill, a 1949 EG that is mechanically near perfect, great wood with no cracks and only a few handling marks, not a single spec of rust, with the only wear being thin bluing on the receiver and thin case color on the loop. The chamber and rifling are excellent.

I hope to get a ton of use out of this rifle in the years to come, so I may have some question from you Savage experts in the near future.

Best smile

That is AWESOME! You are going to love looking at it, carrying it, running your hands across when you're on your stand and showing it off. You'll like all the others that follow also. smile
Good job.

Hey, I've got it's brother except mine has a Redfield 70 with a Sheard bead up front! Hope you enjoy yours as much as I did mine. There is a great difference in the feel of a 99 unburdened by a scope.

Fine rifle. As was said a Redfield 70LH (or a Lyman 57SA) would be a good addition. Fits the original holes and doesn't detract from value. Great hunter! I'm sure that you'll enjoy it.

Beautiful. There is nothing like a Savage 99 or a Turn of the Century(1900) pocket knife.

Put some rounds down the barrel over sand bags, and Boy Does She Shoot! The Lyman 2A Combination tracks fairly straight for elevation and it was adjusted pretty much down the middle for windage. She groups well in my opinion. I'm pleased so far smile

I do have a question about the sight, I'll post the question in a new thread.
