I've never shot a 250 savage rifle. I'm considering finding one for my daughters first deer rifle.
Is there much difference in recoil between 250 savage vs 300 savage? What about compared to .243?
In Oregon she can hunt at 9 in a supervised mentor program, she's very tall for her age and at 9 will be about the size of an average 11 year old girl. Are there any 99's with shorter length of pull? Are the carbines any shorter?
This is still two years away, but i wouldn't mind starting to keep my eye out and getting her accustomed to it.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. You are on it, keep your eye out and the perfect, already been shortened one will pop up. Recoil is mild, everything is sweet, better than a stupid 243 that's fer sure!

great choice! the 250-3000 is a great cartridge imo Big enough for meat animals and fast enough for dog types
A shootin iron is a tool used for shootin much like a branding iron is a tool used for branding

The .250 is a sweet shooter compared to the .243. I could never understand the difference in the recoil but the .243 always felt sharper to me with equivalent loads.
A .300 with 130 grain bullets and loaded on the low end is also a nice one to start with.
You will pay the .250 premium but it is kind of worth it to have at least one of them to fondle.

You're not going to have any luck looking for a 99 with a shorter length of pull, they were all the same. You could look for one with a recoil pad that you could replace with a thin leather pad or a thin generic plate, that would give you maybe an inch less LOP. Either that or get a replacement stock and cut it a bit short, then you have the original when she finishes growing.
My kids have been shooting 250's since they were about 10, teach them to hold it properly and they won't have a problem.
You do know that pre-1960 99's in 250 Savage have a 1 in 14" twist? 1960 and later had 1 in 10" twist.
Good luck!

Thanks guys, i appreciate it.
Calhoun, that's a great idea. I think cabelas carries a model 99 synthetic stock. I could probably figure out a system with a pad and spacers as she grows. Once she grows into the wood stock, stick it back on there where it belongs.

I agree with Fireball2. About 10 years ago I picked up a 1939 22" barrel .250-3000 EG for my wife. She's not very big and has some health issues but shoots it just fine. The butt was shortened slightly and had a rotted pad on it, drilled and tapped, spray painted, etc. Mechanically excellent with a near perfect bore is why it came home. Removed the paint, touched up the blue, put a generic plate on the butt, had the factory checkering re-cut, and put a used Leupold 2-7 on it. Nice small scope that looks nice on it. It shot factory Remington 100 gr. loads well, my loads with 100's better.
We hunt mostly the East side now. Oregonians will know you probably won't get a tag every year. So, long story short, my wife with mobility issues and sporadic tags finally shot her first buck last year. Offhand, frontal shot at about 150 yds. He stumbled in a circle about 30 ft. and that was it. One of the best shots I've seen somebody make. She is my back up this year while I use my 1908 1899H .30-30 w/ a Redfield 102L rear and a piece of a wheat penny front.
So find her a .250, great gun with low recoil and they have style.
Regards, Bill

I'm another one who finds the .243 a bit sharper to shoot. Give me a .250 any day.

I, too, like the 250-3000 (Savage) over the 243 Winchester. The 243 is 'sharper' in recoil, regardless of the calculated impulse. I just got a 'beater' 99 in 250 from the late 'teens' and I love it! I'd sell off my 243 today, if I didn't have a hesitation over getting rid of my first and only Browning BLR (that's the BLR; I despise the 243 cartridge, but love the BLR platform). I'll probably get over that hesitation one of these days.

Not one good shot of the left side of the receiver.

Not one good shot of the left side of the receiver. There were 67 pictures... However, it is not the left side of the receiver that concerns me about this rifle. However, I have no concerns about the rifle as a shooter.

A little pricey considering the short LOP and that 'special order' butt plate...
Sure would like to see the Letter on that one!

I didn't look at any of the picks, but I would say that the bluing is wore off on the left side. Why? Because that's is the way they traveled in the front seat of a pickup, at least that is the way my dads eg looks. It has been riding muzzle down since the 50's.
If you get your daughter a 250, she could be a trend setter.
