For me on small/medium game-

Varmint bullets do not penetrate deep enough for me.

Mono's produce too narrow of a wound channel for me.

Good bonded 5.56 bullets penetrate deep enough and produce a good size wound channel.

Truly the perfect bullet has not yet been built for 223's/5.56's. Actually it has, it just wasn't put into production.

What about the Remington Core-Lokt Ultra? Not sure its available as a componet?

Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.

The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.

The 62 gr TBBC is in the Federal Tactical line, its the perfect 223 bullet IMHO.

The smallest they make, according to their website, is 100gr .243".

BBerg,
LE = Law Enforcement.
A friend of mine used the Rhinos and he got some to sell if you are interested. He uses 55 grain in 223 rem with 1-12 twist - works just fine.

It isn't bonded but IME the 64 grain powerpoint is an excellent bullet and has shot well in 3 different 1 in 14 twists 22 250's. Will bust shoulders whitetails and blackbears and holds together well. Based on several penetration tests into dry paper, this bullet is head and shoulders above other non-bonded cup and core .224 slugs and doesn't give up much to the monolithics either. I shoot them at 3350 fps in my 14 twist 22 250.

The ATK 77gr TOTM. Think of a 77gr Sierra Matchking constructed like a Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. Very close to optimum.

The perfect bullet would be a 75gr AMAX, bonded and made specifically to fit in M16/AR15 magazines. Make the jacket thin enough up front to where it would upset down to the 1,600-1,800 fps range, but bonded with a thick base so it would still have good weight retention at close range. Couple that with a high BC and you would have a bullet for 223's that would perform from the muzzle to 600 plus yards.

Is there anything preventing the realistic manufacture of your described bullet, other than reluctance on the part of manufacturers?

I would think the Barnes mono's would be a bang up bullet in 22 cal to modest ranges.

Anyone have any reports to share?

I have had good results on small deer with the Hornaday 55 grain in a .223 as well as Nosler, Barnes, and the Winchester 64 grain PP.

Some of the custom bullet makers will turn out bonded .224 caliber bullets exactly to your specs if you order 500-1000.

Barts, Taipan, GSC and Alaska Bullet works might be possibilities.
Corbin has a list of small custom makers.

RWS makes some good bullets in 5.65mm intended for Roe deer.

This would be a great time for scenarshooter to load up some pics. Been awhile since since my screen was FILLED with antlers/horns, on critters felled by .224's.

Nope. They just do not think there is a market.

They work well up until around 250 to 300 yards. After that velocity is to low for good performance.
