I recently heard of this round, supposed to be a .300 Win Mag necked down to .264. That sounds like basically a .264 Win Mag, but the claimed performance is 3350 fps with a 140 Accubond! I know the .264 WM is supposed to get more like 31-32 with a 140. My dad passed me this from a guy he works with down in Texas. I have a .260 and really like it, but it is tempting to add a hotter 6.5 to the gun room. Otherwise maybe a .338-06 or some kind of thumper like that Is the .264 WM the fastest practical 6.5 round? Does anyone here have the "Max"?

It should be somewhat like comparing the 300WinMag to the 30-338WinMag or .308 Norma. The 300WinMag case is a bit larger than the .264WinMag case, but not by a large margin. I've always thought that a 6.5mm or 7mm on the standard 300WinMag case would be easy ways to gain a bit more power without a lot of fuss and not a lot of OAL problems in a 700LA.
Now with even more aplomb

Yep, shorten the neck on a 308 Norma by blowing the shoulder forward and you have a 300 WinMAg. Fascinating 6.5 there, my 7mm Mashburn Super is about the same thing in 7mm cal. I am pushing 120gr TTSX's out the snout at 3700fps.

I just built a 6.5-300wm. I'm working on loads for it now. I was running into pressure signs at 3250fps but I'm pretty sure it was because the neck was too tight. I set it for .0035 over the case I measured when I ordered the reamer and a lot of the other brass I have been using is actually larger. So I had to turn some necks. Right now my loaded cases are .2895 to .290 and the reamer is .294 so I should be good. I'll probably shoot it again tomorrow or Saturday. Despite the erratic pressures it wants to shoot. I have a few 3 shot groups around 1/2" and I think it will do better when I get everything worked out. Mine is built on a on SS Rem. 700 with a 8 twist Bartlein spiral fluted Rem. Varmint contour in a HS stock and a Jewell trigger.

Yep, shorten the neck on a 308 Norma by blowing the shoulder forward and you have a 300 Win Mag. Well, not really. The 300 Win case is .060" longer than the Norma.

Standard .264 WM with a whole lotta barrel. 130 grain TSX's and not even breaking a sweat. What barrel length and powder and how much. I just loaded 12 264WM rounds with JLK 130 gr vld's in groups of 3 starting with 64 gr of H4831 and ending at 67gr h4831. Just need to get them to the range and chrono them. if no pressure signs I will go higher. My barrel is a 30" Shilen 1 in 8 twist.

Well I shot my 6.5-300wm again this morning and it is accurate. I shot 3 different 3 shot groups that were .44, .50, and .61".I think it will do better with a different scope. The reticle is too large in the Zeiss that is on it for super tight groups IMO. The down side is I'm still showing pressure above 3250-3280fps with 140 Amax's. I'm running .004 to .0045 neck clearance right now and will probably try .006-.007 to see if it helps with the pressure. Slow barrels are disappointing but if they are accurate it makes them more tolerable.

3250 with 140s sounds about right for a max end.
