I just purchases the 4-12x40 bdc model and was just wondering if anyone else has tried one and what did you think of it? Moneys tight right now but, I figured maybe it would be suitable for use on my 30-06 for the up coming deer season in November no target use just hunting. Planned on using handloads consisting of Hornady 168gr. A-Max over H4350. Thanks for all info!

I don't have the 4-12, but my 2-7 is a big step up from the first generation. The second generation has better glass, fast focus eye piece, and finger adjustable turrets. Nikon listened to complaints about Gen 1 and responded.

I think I will like mine better than the older 3-9x40 Prostaff I use to have. Thanks!

I have a 3-9 and compared to several older models I have it is a real step up. I was very surprised at the difference when I got it. They are comparable to the older monarch in my opinion.

I put the 2011 PROSTAFF 4-12 BDC on my son's and Father in-law's rifles last year. They both connected on nice deer. In fact my father in law connected on 4, all 1 shot stop's between 200-400 yards. A first for him. We did put in two trips to the range as well to help him understand how the BDC reticle works.
My son has zero problem's with it since he pretty much grew up shooting with one.
2 Generation's one scope, 5 deer!

i wouldn't use nikon if they were given to me.

I run a couple of these cheap scopes:

Pretty good view for a "cheap" scope.

A cheap nikon will kill game just as good as your Kahles..... it's just a aiming device....

The Prostaff is the bottom rung on the ladder of acceptability in my opinion. They aren't a bad scope, and will do what needs to be done. If money were real tight I'd use one.

A VX-1 is only $30-$40 more and has some features that make it a far better choice in my opinion. I'd have a hard time letting that little difference in money keep me from a much better scope.

While I'm sure the high end scopes are better, I can't imagine needing anything more expensive than a VX-2. And I've got a few VX-III's and VX-3's, as well as Zeiss. Good scopes, but not enough better than the VX-2 for me to ever pay the extra for again.

My friend bought a new pro staff just like the one you mention. He loves it. I am kind of biased because the first gen pro staff's simply sucked....I've had monarch's and buckmasters and the buckmaster is the one I'd go for if I were looking to save money and get an excellent scope. The monarch just wasn't that much better than the buckmaster to warrant the extra money. My new Monarch X, well that is in a whole different league all together....Good luck with the new pro staff...

I have the old style Nikon Pro Staff 2-7x32 shotgun scope
on my Ruger 77 RSI 7mm-08 now.It ain`t a Leupold or Zeiss but it holds zero and hits where it is supposed to if I do my part right.

i personally have zeiss conquest on all of mine except a cheap ole nef single shot in 280 i have a cheap ole burris it kills just fine

First, nikon customer service is HORRIBLE! Second since I had to deal with their customer service because of their terrible product made me even madder. I hunted with a Monarch for a couple years and once I got my hands on GOOD glass I got rid of the Nikon crap. Can you tell I am not a Nikon fan? I have a Swift that is better than any Nikon I have ever looked through. To me the main difference is in low light conditions, Nikon really loses in lowlight conditions. Did I say their customer service is terrible also? Don't know about Leupold (I have scope or 2 in the vxiii line) or Kahles customer service, never needed it and I hunt some portion of EVERY day of our deer seasons here in Tennessee. My equipment gets used hard during hunting season.

I like my 2nd generation Nikon. Purchased it over the winter and have ~50 rounds throught it. No issues so far.

For a little more, dont overlook the Burris FF. There was a review on optics talk where they reviewed the "inexpensive (for some) scopes". They had the Nikon Prostaff, Burris, Vortex and Redfield in their. They rated the Burris 2nd to the Vortex overall.

Burris Fullfield ii is a good piece of glass and tough.

People kill thousands of animals with Nikon, but if it was left up to me they would not sell any optics at all.
