Looking at some handheld radios. Trying to decide between UHF and VHF. Any input one way or the other?

I use 5 watt VHF radios. There is no comparison with the best
GMRS radios at all.

I think VHF is probably better for you.
And yes, good 5 watt or even 3 Watt VHF can go a very long way in open terrain.
