I bought this today from an old man that said it used to belong to our police department. Did I get hosed at $200.00? How can I determine date of manufacture. Says 32 Long Ctg on barrell. My first revolver.

Has it got the full grip frame showing at the rear or are the grips stepped?
No matter, I think a deuce is a bit high considering the condition.

they're neat little guns, but I wouldn't pay that for one with scale rust on it.

The Old Man bought one nearly identical to that in Tx back around '64. I gave it away 20 years ago.

don't know about being hosed, but you sure paid too much for an old Smith in poor condition.

I have to agree with Sam & Terry. I THINK what you have is a S&W Hand Ejector, 5th Model, a look at the cylinder release and patent dates on the top of the barrel would verify that. They WERE a police department issue pistol for a couple of decades. If that's what you have, it is actually worth around $150, tops, based on the condition in your picture. I just had mine appraised, it is in 90% condition, and it is only valued at $250.00. Mine is scary accurate with .32 match wadcutters (Fiocci and Federal make them)out to 100yds! I can keep all six of them on a man-size silhouette at that range, offhand. Low recoil, cheap to reload, small grip frame and decent triggers make them ideal for teaching young folks and small framed women to shoot centerfires. Just plain FUN! Ed

Very nice, Terry. I wonder how it shoots with the match wadcutters?

The members over at the S&W forum will be able to help you out. http://smith-wessonforum.com/forum.phpBullseye and Hornady 90 gr. HBWC's are a great recipe for fun. I used to have a 3" model 31 that was the most accurate handgun I owned.

I don't think you got hosed. Yes, you could have bought something else for $200, maybe even $150. But I have yet to see any shooter quality Smiths sell for south of two hundred smackeroos for a long time. Six years ago .32 Hand Ejectors in "fair" condition were listed in the "Standard Catalog of Smith and Wesson" as going for $165, while guns in "poor" condition were pegged at $90. At the top end of the scale a factory engraved, presentation inscribed, pearl stock with medalions, .32 Hand Ejector in 95% condition sold at auction for $3,150 -- in 2006.
These are cool little guns and, unless the barrel is shot out, they are damn accurate shooters. If it were mine I'd just clean it up and shoot it.
