Every year during this time i'm out after coyotes. There r a couple kids i often take with me. Last season, we were out on a coyote hunt with this 1 kid, and his brother. This kid used to haul around his little Marlin 22 RF that he'd mounted a 3-9X Simmons on top of, and he's actually quite a good shot with that little rig. We spotted what i thought were a couple coyotes way off on this ranch i often hunt. After a nice long walk we reglassed them, and they were just antelope, so on the way back to the truck, i took a look at the plex reticle in his scope. I told him it looked like it subtended maybe 6 MOA to the lower post @ 9X. I then asked him what it was zeroed for, and he told me about 75 yds. I then told him that @ 3X it would be about 3X that subtension @ maybe 18MOA, and i said that would probably get him to about 300 yds. or so for a long-range zero. On the way back to the truck we passed thru a pr. dog town, so we got setup to try a couple shots @ 300+/- yds. just for fun. I zapped a couple dogs at about 295 yds., and told him to try a couple shots. He had 1 of my short bipods on it, so he gets set up, and takes the shot. Hits just short of the dog, he quickly adjusts his reticle a little higher, and nails the dog, and it falls over backward off the mound. The other dog turns to look at his dying brother, and takes the next bullet that falls out of the air. We walked out and sure enuf both dogs r laying back behind the mound. Couldn't hardly believe it, but darned if it didn't work. Pretty proud kid-- i'll tell u that. Kinda fun when u see the systems work.
