If that's a coyote....he's in big trouble. I give him until the end of the week to live. smile He's in woof country and won't be there long if it's a coyote.

If so, I misjudged the size by a long shot. I have a pretty good idea where TJAY's camp is. Never heard of a coyote up there, but I'm sure there are some.

Tom,
Wolves and coyotes really do coexist and always have. It may be an uneasy coexistence but they manage. Just like foxes, skunks and coons survive in coyote country.

Nope. Not a very pleasant end to that coyote. Coyotes will often do the same to red foxes, which are also found in the same country.

Oh I figured they'd coexist. I've seen it in WI. Where TJAY's camp is I've never heard of anyone even seeing a coyote. I'm sure they're there, but oof-dah, tough way to make a living up there if you're a coyote.

coyotes just get a lot more scarce when wolves are in the area. They don't move around as much and they stick to heavier cover (usually), so you don't see them as often. Coyotes have always been in the Arrowhead country and yet, you hardly ever see them up there. The wolves keep them in line.

FWIW, the first coyote known to Europeans was collected in Iowa by Lewis and Clark. They were not found east of the Mississippi until late in the 20th century. But north and west, they extend to the coasts and always have.

someone once told me that man tried to wipe out wolves and in the mountain states pretty much did it. we tried to wipe out coyotes and didnt make a dent.

I sure hope I get a chance to put Mr. Woof in my scope next week....

It will be interesting to hear how the wolf hunting goes up there this fall. What is the ratio of tags sold to quota to be killed?

It is my thought kowing how tall the vegetation is there that that critter is to big to be a yote, but hay I've was wrong once before. This is from an area have seen and photo'd wolves the last three years.

Doesn't a wolf have a shorter broader muzzle?Looks like a coyote to me.

There were 6k tags for 400 wolves to be killed. I don't think there will be anywhere near that many killed, with the trappers doing the most damage.

That works out to about a 6.7% chance - if all 400 are killed. Tall odds indeed.
