I love pre-mil, but for a shooter I'd go post-mil as all the pre-mils have the [bleep] twist.

Look everywhere from gunshops, pawnshops, ads in your local thrifty nickel paper, internet, police or private auctions, shooting range bulletin boards, etc. Anywhere you can think of. Talk to people about it. Join your local shooting club. Search them out.
Side question- Did the post 1960 Model E also have the 1-10 twist barrel while retaining the lever safety style receiver? I'm assuming they did go to 1-10 also. Can't remember seeing one anywhere. Notice in the Murrays they didn't make them most years in 250/E

I am not so bright John, and I am very resistant to learning new stuff and it's my bedtime and I have to work tomorrow and my dog just pooped on the floor and I think I heard something outside and... ok, where do I go to learn how to do it? For you John, only for you. Because you pulled those people out of that burning building, otherwise, forget it. * Added an avatar, or aviator as you like to call them. Even changed my tagline to something we can all agree on.

Just keep your eyes open and have your cash handy as you never know when or were they might show up. Seen some at local Gun shows but they tend to be a bit pricey. Keep looking/asking.

i am not a collector.. want a shooter in 250-3000. what model 99 to look for. related price would be nice to know also. thanks ************************************************ I'd suggest you look for a Model 99 that has the removable clip and tang safety rather than the rotary magazine. These "features" would automatically make the rifle a "post-mil" and less expensive than the pre-mil Model 99 rifles since collectors have little interest in these post-mil rifles. However, such a post-mil Model 99 would still be an excellent eastern deer rifle and the ,250-3000 (aka ".250 Savage") is a fine cartridge for deer... especially with the 100 grain bullet. We have a "rule" at our deer camp which reads that ALL firearms MUST be totally UNLOADED before entering the cabin. My rifle is a 1953 EG and has a rotary magazine which means I have to "lever" all the rounds in the rotary magazine through the action in order to "empty" the rifle whereas if it had a "clip", I could simply remove the clip and "lever" a single round out of the chamber which would satisfy our camp's "rule". This would be much handier for me to accomplish. Just "food-for-thought" & my 2... Strength & Honor... Ron T.
It's smart to hang around old guys 'cause they know lotsa stuff...

I have owned several M99's over the years both pre and post-mil. I like the tang safety and the fit and finish is usually much nicer on the older guns. The most accurate one I ever had was an early 1950's model with a 24" 1-14 twist barrel. With IMR4320 powder and 87gr. Speer Spitzers, it consistently shot around 3/4" groups at 100 yards. The scope was a Baush & Lomb 2.5-8 in Redfield mounts. It shot 100gr. round nose bullets into about 1.5", but I never used them for hunting At first, I thought being limited to 87gr. bullets would be handicap until I started hunting with it. I might as well had a single shot, as nothing ever required more than one shot to bring it down.

I have a later model A (I think) with a tang safety, no pistol grip and no checkering in 250-3000. 22" Barrel. It's factory drilled for a scope and a good shooter. It has the faster twist and shoots 100's nicely. I've seen a couple of these on Gunbroker for a halfway decent price.
I appreciate the post. I didn't know that the featherweights made in the 50's had the slower twist. I've been looking for one.
