Box shows up yesterday. 18 inch floated upper for the 6mm WOA round. 6.8 spc necked to 6mm. Dont' have powder or bullets yet, so it'll be some time before I can load some up and play. But hope to shoot it some for deer and hogs before deer seasons close for good.

I'll post some pics of the upper and loaded ammo when I get that far. I dont' have much brass so was told to dump in X grains of powder and hunt. I'll have dies later on to test for accuracy.

This is really a hunting upper more than anything- its around 100-200 fps short of a 243 (the ones I"ve had anyway) and should be very good with the 85 TSX bullet for game. Varmints wont' know the difference either, but may fall to more like 55s....later on.

Could be interesting as this is simply a play toy and has a slightly used 6mm barrel on it that was rechambered. Do know some pretty good scores in competition fired with the round also already. PS feeds out of standard mags as I was told. Time will tell.

More to come later.

Jeff

Yeah!! Wife went out of town today and stopped by Sportsman's Whorehouse. In 3 hours I'll have 85 grain Triple Shock Barnes and a pound of Benchmark. Hope to get things rolling this weekend. Load ammo, put scope on, zero gun, etc... and pray for a hunting chance next weekend somehow.

Maybe pics later in the weekend.

Sounds like fun!! I hope to begin loading for my 243 WSSM this weekend too, unless I'm too spent from coyote hunting. I've got three boxes of 85 grain TSX's and a pound of H4350 on the shelf calling my name, too. The factory stuff going in to sub MOA groups may be good enough for a while. I went out a weekend or so ago for a few minutes range time and had one group at just under .7 one just over .7 and one at .875. With only about 20 rounds fired she's till not broke in and all shooting has been factory loads. I won't trade hunting time for range time right now so I may be shooting factory stuff all winter .

WSSM should be kick butt too!! Wonder about the tube life, but really not that big of a deal anyway. Tubes aren't that high if you like to shoot a lot. If not a tube will last a long time.

Post MV when you get a chance.

Okey dokey...now how did one of them thar 6mm Wachamacallits end up in LaGrange? Did it fall of the UPS Truck on it's way to Hawaii? If it had a chromed receiver I'd be sure that it did

UPS was going your direction and I knew about it so they detoured....

Update. Ammo loaded, first group half inch at 100 in a hurry. 2 Does dead with 85 TSX and perfect bullet performance. Like a mini 243 basically. One heart shot, one head shot.

I could bring it and we could test on Axis/Mouflon one of these years.

Camera, website etc.... here have not cooperated yet to post pics. Coming once we get it sorted out.

Man bring on the hogs-- I saw the first bullet hit and might have seen the second one hit the head, IE quick followups possible.

FWIW the 85tsx performs basically as flat as my 243 and 100s, and the bullet is as good, actually better than a 100 gn in 243 in my books.

Give us some more specifics, Jeff. Who makes the dies for this? Who put it together for you? It sounds like you already had the barrel but it must have been rechambered. Did the builder recut the chamber and has the reamer? Which upper receiver and handguard did you use? Any issues with the gas system?

The concept sounds about perfect. 100-200 fps less than a 243 would not be hard to live with at all, particularly from a 18" carbine!

What about weight? Are you trying to make this one a light weight just as you are with the 50? I carried my 243 WSSM for several hours a weekend ago and while I didn't notice the weight at first, it became noticeable after five hours. But then so might have anything when your not as used to it as you would like to be.

I'm totally with you on the Barnes 85 TSX's. They look to be the perfect 243 bullet (price notwithstanding) for any 6mm chambering to me. Sure sounds like they shoot for you! You haven't even put in much time in load developement at all and your getting 1/2" groups already! Wow!!

Hi Ricky,
Jeff musta missed your question so I'll try to answer a few. The upper I put together for Jeff has a relatively light weight 18" barrel. Gas system is somewhere between mid-length and rifle length. Not because it needed to be for function, but rather becasue the barrel was originally a 6x45 that I cut about 1.5" off the back end of. I have a reamer and seating dies, Redding is making more sizers for me right now. Upper receiver is a used one I had around the shop, forend tube is a carbon fiber one to keep weight down. I won't let Jeff post a pic of it, it is to danged ugly with all the used parts on it. Basically just a test bed upper.

Hope that helps.
John

Hi Rick

I get all my ARs from White Oak Armament. Run by a National Champion Highpower Civilian Shooter. And a good High Master shooter friend of his.

He started since he wasn't satisfied with others work and quality. Very particular about his work. He has the lower end barrels subbed out to do eterior machine work by a super place in Florida but does everything else barrel wise himself.

Its an old 6mm barrel from a 6x45 that he had laying around. He did the round as a match round and then got to thinking-- lets try it on deer so he put the upper together for me. Gas port is too big for me to run N550 and really soup it up hard with this barrel.

Upper I am not sure, most that John uses are of Continental orgins but must meet his approval. Handguard is carbon fiber. I'll spray it lightly with bedliner. Catches my wool too easy.

I'm trying to stay light on this one too. But the barrel is not that light of a contour and I dont' want to turn it down the way it shoots. You are right on the weight too-- after all day I'm wishing for 5 pounds. And since its not shot that often- recoil isn't an issue. Even with my 50.

I still have to chrono the gun as I have data from a 26 inch tube and am SWAG the speed mostly.

Still no time to do the right photos on the gun and deer-- maybe next week.

Jeff

Thanks Jeff.

I kinda figured it was a White Oak gun after your post on another thread, so I used the link to send them an inquiry. I'm not ready to buy anything right now, as I have several I really need to work with now anyway, but I like planning and you never know what a few weeks might bring.

The 204 they offer might just get in front of another 6 right now, anyway. Lots of possibilities with that one, too.

Nice tip on carbon fiber and wool and I imagine any similar material. Good fix too except for covering up that cool look. Functional trumps cool any day with me if there has to be a choice made.

Enjoy that 6. Got any more seasons to try it in?

Rick

Doe season goes another 2 weeks. Coyotes need looking after here at some point. Have friends that added a note in a sympathy card we got after Dad died-- they have a few hogs going on that can be shot. And our practice highpower rifle range is infested with hogs right now as is another friends pasture.

Only problem is finding time enough to do it all.
