Hey everybody- I had someone offer me a kimber 84L or ascent in a 280AI. Unfortunately i was just told that the rifle still needed to be ordered and not here! I like the 280AI as a cartridge but it can take upto 1 year for the rifle to ship from Kimber. That is a loooong time. the 270 is more readily available. I know that the 7mm has a better selection of high BC bullets but for most realistic shot distances does it really matter? I cant see myself shooting much past 500yds. The rifle is meant as a general use out west mountain trekker. Mulies, elk and sheep when and if i can draw a tag. I guess what i am saying and asking is if the wait for the 280AI is worth it? I know it has an edge on paper but once past 300yds arent we counting clicks or managing a hold over anyway? Just looking for others opinions. The 270 has a pedigree no doubt but it just seems kinda boring. But then again maybe boring is good??? Thanks in advance- just trying to balance patience and effectiveness.

This is just me but I'd be rolling the way of the .270 and get on with it.

+1 on what Mark said

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

In the end, you should get the one you WANT, because if you don't, well, you'll still WANT the one you wanted.....

I'd wait for the .280AI......plenty of others to pop primers in while waiting....heck, get the .270 and trip it next year when the .280AI comes in!

280AI

More than one post on here that says the .270 SUCKS wink

Personally, there's just nothing about a .270 that does anything for me. I've owned three of them and never fired a shot through any of them before they got traded/sold.

Is the 84L a montana? We don't get allot of rain in AZ, but hunting with a blue/wood rifle seems to almost be a rain dance for me. As for the Ascent, I don't think its worth the extra money. I've picked up a 84L Montana in 30-06, about as boring as you can get, but it covers anything I'll need. Now everything else is just to play with. I'll be picking up a 25-06 or .270 once people realize how inferior to the forbes/Ascent they are and start dumping them. Although I've noticed that the prices of used Montana's has gone back up. Maybe we need to start another round of bad publicity/rumors?

Also, no reason to wait on a Montana in any variety as they are all over gunbroker and the other auction places.

6.5-06 will be on your do before the 280AI.... good thing ;-)

I hear what Dober was saying and I tend to agree until the wind blows out west and the shot is 550 ;-) 162's abd 168's are slippery.

Of course I was in the local store and there was a Montana in 25-06. I could like that! Maybe you could too. ;-) Even though it goes against what I just posted.

yah-very happy the 6.5-06 is on the way soon. especially when i was told the 280 was here only to find out it isnt due for awhile yet.

i never have been a big 25-06 Guy. i might try a 270 in a 84l montana just to kill some time. anyone seen one around?

Can't see going for a 270 when the 280 Ackley is an available chambering.
