After many years of drooling over them I finally got a 99. The stock has been shortened I'm probably going to put a recoil pad on it.

Welcome to the Forum, Searcher...

The Model 99, especially in .300 Savage, is "THE" outstanding deer rifle with a point-blank-range of 250 yards! I.E., using factory ammo at 2630 fps with a 150 grain bullet, the bullet never rises or falls more than 3 inches from the rifle's muzzle out to a range of 250 yards. Therefore, a hunter can "hold" on the spot where he wants to place the bullet and it will strike the target no more than 3 inches from the point-of-aim when the trigger is pulled.

At a somewhat shorter range (200 yards or shorter-preferably shorter), it will take elk, caribou, moose and black bears with equal ease with good bullet placement.

If you hand-load, my "pet" hunting load for my Model 99 in .300 Savage is 40.8 grains of Hodgdon's H4895 rifle powder behind a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip bullet sparked by a standard Winchester larger rifle primer in once fired Winchester cartridge cases.

This load and my "EG's" 24-inch barrel yields a chronographed muzzle velocity of 2635 fps with a deviation of only 3 fps (+1 fps/-2 fps) in muzzle velocity and a little less than a minute-of-angle accuracy.

Hodgdon's H4895 rifle powder is one of their "EXTREME" powders meaning the muzzle velocity it yields is unaffected by air temperature and thus gives the SAME muzzle velocity whether you are "working up" a load in the August heat or shooting at game with that same load in frigid December.

This advantage is important since muzzle velocities using other rifle powders CAN and DO vary as much as 50-75 fps depending on temperature. Such a variation can change the bullet's point-of-impact, especially at longer ranges. Hodgdon's "EXTREME" powders eliminate that concerned completely.

Enjoy your new Model 99 rifle... it doesn't get better than what you've got! smile

Might I suggest a slip-on recoil pad for a while? Give you some time to think about what to do with that buttstock without making any permanent changes.

I've got several that had really ugly recoil pads on, I pulled them off and used a generic buttplate. Comes out about 1/2" or so short on LOP, but not enough to bother me.

You done good! The only problem is, it's impossible to stop with just one 99. Hang around these guys and you will end up like me and the rest of them. My gun room is busting at the seams with 99s and I'm still on the hunt for another. They are great rifles. grin

I had watched that one but since I have already purchased 3 this year I guessed I had better lay off and not bid. It looked like a real nice example. You will love it in the deer woods. Took a 9 point with my one 300 last year. I mostly have a fetish for certain old military arms with one exception and that is a big one.......MODEL 99's.

You bought it at a good price. Have you shot it yet? The stock is made for a peep sight. I prefer a tang sight over the buckhorn sight that's on it. Keep us informed.

Sorry, but are you saying factory drilled and tapped for a sidemount?

yea, why go to the expense and trouble of a side mount when it's already drilled on top right?! Sheesh.

You see more than one of those with factory d&t holes and aftermarket side mounts. Ranks right up there with putting a recoil pad on a 250-3000 or 243.
