I've got a 99EG (300sav) that I'm getting set up to hunt with for the first time this year. My final issue is the front sight. It's the original, I'm assuming, and the bead is gone. I have a number of other rifles set up with peeps and white/ivory beads and have gotten really like those instead of a brass or gold bead (my eyes aren't what they used to be).
I would like to replace the front sight on the 99 with one with a white bead. I know it won't be "correct" but I don't want it to look too awfully out of place. I've looked and it seems a Lyman #31 is the closest choice. Before I go that route I thought I'd check with you guys and see if anyone has any other suggestions for one that would be a better choice for a 99.
Thanks - and I apologize if I'm making anyone cringe.

My notes say a Lyman 31 or 37. The 37 has a larger bead.
The original EG sights don't really have a separate distinct bead like most sights do. You can shine it up with an emery or fine sandpaper but that's it.
It's your gun. Do what you want to make it work for you. Just don't drill and tap it!
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply Lightfoot. With the info you just gave me I'm betting now that the sight is not original after all. It has the small hole where a bead would have been at one time. It is a Lyman (written on the sight). So maybe the #31 is a better match than I thought. Many of the Lyman and Marbles I've used on other rifles don't have the swooped look but rather a more straight up style like that on a Winchester or Marlin.
Oh, and it's already been drilled and tapped... I bought it it that way. I really just wanted a shooter/hunter in lieu of a collector. So I didn't mind it since it reduced the price a little... and I'm not afraid to take it to the woods and use it.
Thanks!
