I've not killed anything with my 1987 M700 Mtn Rifle since a pronghorn hunt near Medicine Bow in 2002. Put the scope on something else.

Dug it out last year, put a 'Fire bought M8 6x42 in Talleys on it last winter and finally zeroed it w Fed Powershok a couple weeks ago. Just under an inch.

Then Midway had a sale on Premiums loaded with 110 TTSX (3400 fps'ish) at $21 a box. Since that's what Corelokts go for at my local Wally,I bought five.

After I tweak the zero, I could probably kill about 95 whitetail or coyote around here without ever needing anything else.

Nice to have an elk rifle that thinks it's a .22/250 around, too. grin

Shoot it and kill animals that fill your freezer. No files on the .270 Win, I see no real advantage to going .280 or the AI version. The only difference you'll ever see between them is on paper.

My recommedation is instead of searching for barrels I'd be looking to save money to have the optics upgraded. I'd either replace the scope with a newer VX2/3 or send the old Leupold back to have the lense coatings upgraded and changed over to click adjustments. Maybe even add a M1 turret to the elevation side and a LRD reticle.

The only thing that 270 needs is a good skinning knife and some Nosler Partitions!

I've been using the 150g Partition in my 270 for 40 years, killed everything from javelina, to deer, to elk, black bear and finished a couple of grizzlies with it. BTW the 30-06 is a lovely round too, apologize for my "troll" earlier ...

I think the 270 attracts it's disdain from being too popular and too practical, just like the 7mm Rem Mag and the 243 Win. You know how cool it is to dislike something that's popular, some guys feel it's sets them apart from the pack, makes them feel smarter than the guys who carry something common. Really cool shooters will carry a 280 over a 270, a 7 STW or WSM over the 7mm Rem Mag and a 6mm over a 243. The whole thing is rather funny actually.

I avoided the .270 for 40 years. Now I have two. My "go to" gun.
I have only hunted deer and hogs, but it works well to those bigger, tough boars.
Great deal. Bet he loves it. My old ADL is a great shooter.

I think we all "know" that the .270 is a fine hunting cartridge in all respects but that we have a natural tendency to react against people who too passionately proclaim what they like as superior to all else and that anyone who doesn't agree with them is some how inferior.

I would rather have a .280 than a .270 and a 6.5-06 over a .25-06 but that isn't because I think one is seriously "better" than the others.

What's not to like about a cartridge that blends something of the recoil characteristics of the 6.5x55, the ballistics of the .300 win mag and the power of the .30-06?

The 6.8x63 mm is a wonderful round.

For pretty much subjective reasons! I like the .280 better because I "like" to shoot 160-175 gr. loads if I'm gonna use it for elk. I "like" the 6.5 over the .25 because I really "like" 129-140 gr. bullets for deer (which I KNOW is the .270's bread and butter!). I like them but I won't preach them as better...but then again the converse is true also! Because the two I chose are better with the heavier bullets they might be just a bit more versatile...again not enough to argue about!

So in your experiences with the .270 Win,you need heavy weights to kill Elk?

So how many Elk have you killed or personally seen, with the .270 or .280 to draw that conclusion?

Just curious.....

Many years ago I had a neighbor who claimed he shot bear in Alaska with a 270 on several occasions. He passed while I was gone in the Army in the early 1970's. I sure wish I knew where that .270 went. kwg

Do you know the definition of "subjective"? He just likes them better...that's why. And it's his decision as to what chamberings he wants to shoot, so there's no reason to try and beat him up about it.

I don't have to shoot a herd full of animals with every cartridge to make a decision. I feel more comfortable on a non-broadside shot to have a bit more bullet weight/sectional density. Just gives me more confidence to make a shot on an angle that is less than ideal. I know the .270 will work.

Seriously, .25-06, 6.5-06, .270, .280, 30-06, etc. you can't REALLY argue that one is gonna be "better" than any of the others in EVERY given situation with EVERY available bullet. There is no REAL reason to choose a .270 over a .280 or vice versa. With each the differences are so small as to really be negligible...couple inches here, couple of foot pounds there...so what.

I personally feel the 270 win is like an A** hole...everybody should have one. My last count was two....270's that is. Seriously though, My father-n-law used to guide elk hunts in Idaho. He always said he had very little concern with the man that showed up with a well worn, but maintained 270. His concern was the loudmouth with the newest wiz-bang magnum. Of course, he said he always carried his Pre-64 300 H&H, just in case.

All I can say is that the four cow elk I've killed with the .270 all died very quickly from either a 130 or 150 grain Nosler Partition. They all went down as fast or faster than the one I shot with a .30-06 using a 180 grain bullet. The .280 has no fleas but the extra weight of a 160 or 175 isn't going to make a difference except on the ballistic charts.
