I have a model 24 Winchester 16 gauge side by side that has been in the family a while. Recently, the extractors have been wearing grooves in the receiver face across the firing pin holes for both barrels. What could be the cause of this and what does it take to fix it? I am very fond of this shotgun and would like to bring it back to perfect operating condition.

Good question. The extractors are rubbing against the receiver face all the way until the action closes. Why would this be?

IT's been awhile since I've looked at a 24 Winchester but as I
recall the extractors went back as the action opened fully.
My first suggestion is to clean up the action.

Hawkins-By "went back" do you mean come out of contact with the breech face at fully open?

Are the extractors designed to be pushed into their respective barrel lump by the breech face as one closed the action? Is it correct that the extractors contact the breech face at all times unless the barrels are removed from the action?

Both extractors on my shotgun have some vertical play, maybe a little too much. Maybe the angle which the extractors contact the breech face is becoming more steep than when the firearm was new, causing more grooving that there should be as I close the action after loading/unloading.

Also, there is a pawl(?) forward of each extractor. These pawls would be pressing toward their extractor any time the barrels are on the hinge pin. What are these for?

I would like to find a good exploded diagram for this firearm and source for parts (NOS preferably). Any suggestions about the diagram, parts or correct functioning of this shotgun would be greatly appreciated.
