I have a few different blaze wool jackets I use regularly. But both are too hot if it is mid-30's or warmer. One is a nice light weight coat that Columbia makes. It's the only one I've seen like it. The other is a Bemidji Woolen Mills coat that is really heavy. I've only worn it a few times because it's that warm! I got it about 6-7 years ago for Christmas.

Most of last season I wore a fleece 1/4 zip pull over with an orage vest over it. I only remember wearing my lighter wool coat on the last day of gun season and then again during the muzzle loader season.

The fleece is surprisingly quite. As quiet as the wool. I didn't expect that. It's much easier to take care of as far as cleaning goes too.

I think it was 2009 when it was sleeting rain on opener weekend. I finally wanted to get something waterproof and breathable, and the stuff I have like that now I don't want to use hunting. Plus, it came to less than 30 bucks delivered, so even my wife thought I should get it. Who am I to argue????

When it's really cold I wear the Carhart jacket and bibs with an orange vest, and probably still will. That isn't really a good setup for wet weather though. Especially 30's-40's and wet.

Carrying on is suddenly difficult.

Because of the wind and rain and lack of sleep last night, I decided to not sit out in the timber behind the house for an hour like I have been. But I did walk the dogs.

Guess what we saw...

He was GINORMOUS (technical new-age term for effin' HUGE)! Makes all the bucks I've seen on trail cams look like dinks. He was less than 150 yds behind my backdoor. frown frown

Tonight is my last chance with a flintlock. I'm off to KS this tomorrow to shoot the last match of the season and then I'll only be able to use stick and string where this guy hangs and it is not habitat conducive to that. By late muzzle season he will be long gone (and probably dead of a shotgun blast or someone else's arrow.

Yep, that's how it works. For me (and you) anyway.

Maybe you'll get him tonight? Good luck.

No luck. Not a thing moving except one wren, one squirrel and some sort of bird that I've never seen and could only silhouette against the post-sunset sky. I think it was a goatsucker of some sort. It was fun to watch though flipping around in the understory catching something (moths I think).

Might sneak out for a few minutes tomorrow morning, but success would screw up travel plans. Would be worth it though.

I've been chasing does since September.

Neck is swollen, shoulders are in better shape, haven't been eating, I've been peeing in odd places, I grunted twice at work today, and chased the younger interns for no reason.

A flip of the switch on this weather and it's a crap shoot from there.

Dave,

I just saw that The Island Lake Inn burned last night. I don't know how badly or if anyone was hurt though.

Picked up my wolf tag last night, and a bonus tag for my son,in case we see a nice doe this weekend,in the youth hunt.
Also found out I am very short on orange outerwear, now that I have another hunter in the family. grin
Got all our stuff ready(except some orange for me),and a short day at work today, heading for the woods as soon as I get home.
Its 320 am,gotta get up for work in an hour, except Im wide awake, and ready to go.
The season is upon us,guys. laugh

The MN deer youth hunt started yesterday. Nate and I will be headed to camp this afternoon so he can hunt tonight and through the weekend.

I talked to my BIL that lives that way and he said it started in the kitchen hood, and the employees put it out. Then a bit later, they had to evacuate because it was in the walls. shocked That is all I know.

Heading back up to camp Sunday to attack the culvert issue again, I broke down and bought some waders. Waters too deep for hip boots.

Reinforcements coming up from Louisiana to assist.
