Congrats, my father is still hunting at 81, he missed the Pa. pheasant opener today because he had his gall bladder out.

I remember the last bull Dad killed, we were standing side by side we both pulled the trigger and we both yelled you got it. and the last hunt he went on, skinning and bagging elk till midnite with Dad tending a warming fire in about a foot of snow. He looked at me and said this is it kiddo can't I handle the cold anymore. He was 76 then. Sure wish he was still here to hunt with me :-(

Great story. Your dad looks like a fine man... can't hide that IMO.

Oh boy, those are some golden memories, right there! Congrats to both of you. What was his cartridge/bullet combo?

Rifle is a Remington 700 and the bullet was a 140 grain Nosler Accubond. Clipped the near-side shoulder halfway up and exited just behind the offside. Picture perfect lung-shot.

I was watching through the binos at the shot and almost instantly I could see blood coming out of the entrance hole just where you would want it to be. As the bull faltered and turned I could see blood leaking down from the offside exit hole. Dad quickly asked, "Should I shoot again?!" and I said, "Nope he's done." About two seconds after the words got out of my mouth the bull hit the dirt.

Thanks for sharing that.

Knowing that the time left is getting more and more precious makes me appreciate it all the more.

Congrats to your dad and to you and your brothers.

One of the things I never got to do was hunt big game with my Granddad or dad, although Granddad taught my brothers and me how to shoot and hunt small game and we spent many days on lakes fishing. I think Granddad was 83 when he took his first deer. After the third he decided they were too much work. He died just after last Christmas at 100 years old. Dad, now in his early 80's, has never taken any big game and probably never will.
