Spent the morning futilely looking for a very nice whitetail that we had been seeing regularly while archery hunting. He was nowhere to be found, despite glassing for hours and walking a lot of miles through sloughs and CRP that he had been hanging in. Decided to check some different areas and found a pretty substantial # of deer, which was encouraging after the massive die off of 2011. As we were moving from one spot to the next, we had a group of bucks jump from a slough just off the trail that we were driving down. I told the boy he could jump out and take a shot as they ran, but he said he'd rather not shoot one than to shoot one that way. So we watched where they went, then drove around several miles to get into position to make a stalk. Not being entirely sure where they were, we walked a fenceline to a high hill that gave us a vantage point that allowed us to see one of the bucks just as he bedded next to the others. They were at just shy of 750 yds. so we planned a route that would take us up close. We closed to just under 200 yds belly-crawling to the crest of a hill overlooking the bedded bucks. The boy lined up on the wide one in the bunch and squeezed off a shot, killing the buck instantly. He was very happy with the buck and the stalk that made it happen. Good times!!

He shoots a Ruger Hawkeye in .280, topped with a Leupold VX 2 3-9x40. kend from here at the fire painted the stock in a gray with black web pattern a couple of years ago, pretty sharp looking rig.

Congratulations on a nice buck and a good stalk to take it. Very nice group of deer he has taken!

Congrats on a hunt well done.
That young man is putting together a string of very nice bucks.
I gotta hand it to him also on passing the roadhunter deal and doing it with some real hunting. Sounds like a young man that is years ahead of his age.

No doubt - Would have been perfectly legal to shoot it. We were in a pasture on a trail. I was pretty proud of his choice.

Great Stuff, father and son together you will both always remember the trips.
Have you thought about introducing one of his mates to hunting, giving another kid an oportunity to hunt?
I only work to hunt, I hunt to live, the family fits in and the dog is at my right hand. I was a proud Dad the day my Son nailed a Buffalo with his first shot out of my 06 at 11yrs old.
