elkchsr and myself got up early(3:30AM) and headed out for MT's opener to the secret location, DIY public land and spent the morning in the rain walking. A minor effort of +/- 5 miles and about 1500 ft. gained & lost. On the way back for lunch and more coffee for me we were suddenly "amongst 'em". Timing is every thing! About 10:50 my turn came [Linked Image]
and one shot from the Rem. 760 35 Whelen was all it takes. elkchsr has his moment in the sun about 250 yds. down the drainage 10 minutes later and 1 round from an original Newton rifle, 30 Newton cartridge and the deed is done![Linked Image]
The load for the Whelen is a 250gr. Hornady RN and 53.8gr. of IMR 8208 XBR lit w/ a CCI 200 primer.
The Newton load is a 200gr. Nosler Partition and 68.5gr. of IMR 7828 lit with a CCI 250 primer.
Now the real work starts!!!

Ya don't see too many Amish Machine Guns in these parts... great job!

The rain was pretty fierce this am where I was.

Thanks guys, it was a great outing! Hunted w/ his Father for several yrs. but to many slipped disc's have gotten in the way. First time w/ elkchser he was 9 or 10 yrs. old & tagging along. He & I have a couple rifles we trade back & forth, he's got the Newton now.:-( That "machine gun" has taken more elk for me than any of the others I've used & there have been many. Keep thinkin' maybe I should leave well enough alone but naw, that would be borrrriiinnngggg!!! After supper last night we talked about the retrieval work & I stated "I am going to go & get Bud, the wonder mule" & elkchser stated "I'll just call mine", his brother. Well today his elk is in the truck & he's headed home to Helena. Bud is in the corral, tomorrow I go retrieve. Funny how stuff works!
Brad, the rain peetered out here about 9 AM and actually rained harder lower than @ the top of the mountain.
Cheers

I'm working in Lewistown this week and it rained/snowed all day here. Driving up this morning between Harlowtown and Judith Gap it was snowing so hard that you couldn't see the wind turbines from the highway.

Congrats on some good looking bulls! Spending time in elk country with good people is about as good as it gets.

Great hunting story!

Don't you know it's all in your imagination. The lefties here say it doesn't rain or snow anymore!! It's the "new normal", as their new favorite phrase goes.

My elk hunts start in mid November. Too bad they can't last all year...

Got the last mule load to the basement today. About 1/2" snow last night. Saw 10 cows and calves within 50 yds. of my elk when I arrived. Sure got the mule & horse's attention when the elk took off!
Scenarshooter, if you are tired of the rain you could send some my way!! We're due! Haven't even had mud yet.
I think I'll keep this machine gun, something about the impressed basket weave checkering.......
Cheers

30 Newton, now you don't see that every day! Excellent.
