Have any of you guys hunted birds with a Beagle or a Bassett Hound? All I really care is if he/she flushes, not so much bringing them back. The hedgerows and woods are thick around here where the birds are and many times too tight for my Labrador. I thought about a smaller spaniel of some sort, but the burdocks and stick tights of all kinds are everywhere...

ny, when I was a kid, I had a beagle/cocker cross and a beagle..both would hunt phesants, and the beagle was a fair grouse dog..as I remember, they didn't bark the same as when they were on a cottontail, but would kind of yip..I had to keep with them because they would flush the birds as soon as they could..With grouse, the little beagle, Bill, would give a yip, and I would be alert to the possible flush of a bird..they would grab them if crippled, but that was all..even that prevented birds from escaping..

Thanks! That's pretty much all I would really like him to do. Pheasants and grouse love the multi floral rose(sp?)

Got my first beagle in 1960 when i was 14. No rabbits that year but pheasants by the hundreds. He was a pheasant hunting machine. Couple years later the rabbits came back but he wouldn't run them. He was strictly a pheasant dog. Darn don't get me started on beagles. I love them. In my 66 years a have probably owned over 20 beagles. Can't hunt anymore but still have 2 beagles. They are laying on the floor next to me right now.
