I was under the impression that the 7x57 was the first non-rimmed smokeless cartridge, not the 8x57. ????????????????????? Where did that come from??? Wrong...the Patrone 88 rimless of 1888 was 4 years ahead of the 7X57 rimless. I should have put a question mark at the end of the sentence.

I was under the impression that the 7x57 was the first non-rimmed smokeless cartridge, not the 8x57. The 7X57 was a necked down 8X57 (.318 bore, not the later .323 bore). Same basic case, but necked down to meet a Spanish requirement.

I figured that. I just wanted to tweak a nose a little. It was a good question, however.

Here's mine: Top rifle is a Brno 8x57IS, 1950 round knob bolt, single trigger. A favourite!

I got a new 20 inch fluted R8 Blaser barrel, and thought I would try the Ramshot Big game in it with 180 grain Barnes TSX bullets. Started at 50 grains, and worked up to 54 grains. No groups shot were over 1 inch with any load, but as I got closer to 54 grains it came together nicely.

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Several years ago, I knew a person who was in the U. S. Army in Germany during and after WW2. He said that when they went into the villages, or towns, they made all the people bring their guns out into the street and pile them up.
This person was not a rifle or any type of gun loony. He said after they had collected all the guns, he and several other GIs would take them by the barrel and smash the stocks on the pavement, breaking the stocks. I don't remember him saying whether or not there were any fancy ones or engraved ones, but I am sure there were.
Think of all the Mauser sporters and nice shotguns and combination guns that were destroyed in the aftermath of WW2.

My 1944 JP Sauer Sohn Fascist Nazi K98, 1st rifle I sported. Hornady 170rn @ 2700 and 185 Rem Corelokt @ 2550 shot into water jugs. Shot buck with the 185 Remington bullet, once. Thanks for the pics here guys. Thanks JB for recognizing the 8x57. One of my favorites.

Thanks for the kind words Pat. That deer was my first buck, and a shoulder mount is in my small but comfortable living room.

Thanks for the fine photos, gents. My 8x57 collection consists of a Steyr Carbine that kicks like a mule. It has a flip up rear sight, 5 round rotary magazine, buttstock cartridge trap, and a pitted bolt. Next is a rifle that used to be an 8x57, but due to a pitted chamber found new life as a 9.3x64 Brenneke. It started life as JP Sauer & Sohn sporter with double set triggers.

Shot buck with the 185 Remington bullet, once. Apparently once was enough. Nice buck and congrats on taking it with a very cool rifle.

Joe, I love my Oberndrof 8 x 57. But a few hours ago I pulled it out of it's case and put in back in the safe. I replaced it with a Savage 99 G in .300 Savage with a tang sight for the last 3 days of the elk season.

I thought before season opened I was going to use my 1908 M-S carbine. I've not carried it a time but, my 1930 G has gone along with me.

I used my 700 in 8x57 to take an eight-point on opening day this year. No monster, but a nice buck. That rifle never disappoints.
